Why is Microsoft decommissioning the Office Update service?

Effective August 1, 2009, Microsoft discontinued support for "Office Update" and the "Office Update Inventory Tool". Aside from security updates, in order to continue obtaining the latest updates for Microsoft Office products, use either Microsoft Update or Automatic Update.

It would seem logical to bring Windows Office into line with all other application updates.

I suggest that this will encourage Users not to rely solely on the Automatic Update facility [which I do have enabled], but to also do regular manual checks through Windows Update [takes about a minute], which I do at start-up each day, just for a little more added security and reassurance.

I also do a manual check to validate the latest Restore Point, at the same time.
