Vista - I cannot eject an external hard drive

When I right click the icon in the notification area to eject the external
hard drive, a message box always appears "The device cannot be stopped in
this moment. Try to stop it later". Despite of I wait for long time, the same
message box always appears. I always have to shut down the PC. Anybody knows
how I can fix it or how can I force the ejection of the external hard disk?
OS: Windows XP Home Edition

Try this to find an appropriate Win XP discussion group..

In the tree on the left, open English, then open Windows. In Windows, open
the Windows XP category and find a
group there to post in.
