Defrag not defragging

I defragged with only 13% free space after I transferred to flashdrive &
deleted lots of videos & photos. After I still only had 13% & when I printed
out report, most of files that didn't defrag were from my Norton. 10 thousand
unable to defrag. Should I uninstall my Norton, then defrag & then reinstall
it all? I need more than 13% free & hardly have anything stored so I don't
know how I have so little space. I am sure I have alot of garbage in there
between me & my daughter downloading programs we never used or that were
properly installed. I really need to clean this out but have been reading bad
things about using cleaners so I don't know what to do. Please help. I'm
trying to avoid having to pay to bring it in to Best Buy or some other place
to have it cleaned out or whatever they can do. Low on money LOL. Thanks,

Try a Windows newsgroup. This is a newsgroup for programming applications
using Microsoft .NET.

You can use the Windows native disk cleanup utility; it's safe.
My Computer -> select drive and right click -> properties -> disk cleanup.
Delete the temp files, browser cache etc. Don't compress the drive contents.

This should clear up some space. (It will not delete Norton files .)

You can also use the trial version of a commercial defrag utility such as Diskeeper 2009. Install and put DK in auto defrag mode, and it will defrag perfectly fine with even less than 6-7% free space. If the MFT and/or page file are fragmented, run a boot-time defrag to take care of it. The free trial versions work exactly like the full retail version for one month or thereabouts, so there's sufficient time to do your maintenance.

If you're going to go the route of a commercial defragged, use Perfect Disk
Professional. Both DK and PD handle on-line defrags reasonably well, but PD
does a far better job on boot time defrags, getting files that DK won't
touch.

Mike.
