Vista - My Win XP sp3 will not update...help??

It keeps saying it has updates to install but never installs them, I have
gone to the site and downloaded them again and tried to install them but they
will not install they just fail. I have unistalled my symantec just in case
that was the problem but it still wont install the updates. Does anyone have
any help for me??
