Internet drops on vista!!??

Hi,
I recently installed Windows Vista ultimate.
I have random drops from Internet, the only way to fix it is by rebooting the system. i tried disconecting the modem, restarting the modem, logging off from my user, nothing works. Only rebooting.

I have a USB modem ( i know itīs not the best but this never ever happened on XP) and iīm using Vista ultimate. I donīt have any fancy network, just my pc conecting to internet threw the usb adsl modem.

I tried pinging Google and it was successfully. But Firefox, neither IE worked

Any idea?

I have the same issue too. If I'm downloading a file at the moment of the drop, it continues downloading, but I can't acces any web page or log into Yahoo! Messenger or Live Messenger.

Re: Internet drops on vista!!??

I've battled this problem since mid November, I never had no problems until then, using Vista 64. What I did, which helps get rid of most of this for me, if not all of it, was reinstall QOS Packet Scheduling for my onboard Nvidia Gigabit lan, as before I didn't have it installed.

From what I have seen on my own system, is that Vista needs QOS packet scheduling to maintain a stable connection, to your router if you are using a router, which has a built in firewall.

Contrary to what other people on the internet, websites, and magazines say, having QOS Packet Scheduling installed and running, does not use the reserved bandwidth, unless you are running a QOS enabled application.

I found this out, in the Microsoft knowledge base. What surprises me, is that I went around with this with my cable ISP, and the idiots on the phone, couldn't even tell me to reinstall QOS Packet Scheduling, and input the domain name, and DNS server numbers in to my router.

I hope none of you uninstalled QOS Packet Scheduling from your nic properties.

Re: Internet drops on vista!!??

Iīm not using a router neither a Geforce Motherboard based.

As i explained above i just have My Modem directly to the pc and then i share my internet connection with 2 other pcs, (1 is the xbox360 actually).

When i loss connection, iīm still able to ping to any website on the net.. and i can even browse the internet on the other pc (xp OS btw).

really weird.

iīm on ADSL btw and on the network properties i donīt have QOS Packet Scheduling enabled. (itīs unchecked, should i check?)

Re: Internet drops on vista!!??

I would check it, and just let it be. It won't do anything unless you are using a QOS enabled program. My XBOX 360, best I can remember was able to get on the net during this time I had my troubles.

I almost switched to DSL, and now that I discovered this stuff on my own, I'm glad I didn't.

Even with the modem hooked directly to your PC, QOS Packet Scheduler should still be checked. Unchecking it or removing it does absolutely nothing to improve your ADSL speed. I found this out the hard way, with my cable internet connection.

I discovered that by not having QOS Packet Scheduler checked and running or uninstalled completely, I have a lot of trouble with random disconnects from the net with my computer.

I share my internet connection between 3 devices, one is my desktop pc, second is my laptop, and the last one is my XBOX 360.

Have you tried locating updated drivers for your modem?

Do you have any firewall software installed?

Re: Internet drops on vista!!??

No, no firewall. Just windows vistaīs

actaully my system is very clean... i did my fresh install about 2 weeks ago... after that i did windows upate, drivers updates and 4 or 5 hotfix.

beside that, i didnīt install anything.

the network also is very simple... PC connected to a USB modem. and sharing threw ICS 2 other pcs (one is the xbox360)

No idea why this is happening

Just trying to help diagnose the problem. Some common steps that I would take, and you may already have:

1. Delete/uninstall the device from Windows and let Vista re-detect it.
2. Disable ICS for a period of time and see if the problem still crops up.
3. Call my modem manufacturer and inquire about this. It doesn't sound like it's the modem's fault - but it may be a known problem that they can help with.
