169 IP address won't clear in Vista

Hello!

I recently installed Vista64 Ultimate since I have 4gb of ram and a DX10 video card(I am a serious gamer).

Well all was fine until the game I was playing crashed and I had to hit the dreaded reset button on my tower.

When I booted back up I couldn't connect to the internet and the little icon in the lower right hand corner said "connected to unidentified network - local access only".

Well I looked at my IP address and it was a 169 IP. Even Comcast couldn't resolve the problem.

Here is what I tried to resolve it:
Turning off PC, unplugging the modem for 30 seconds, and reconnecting it.
Turning the ethernet cable around.
A different ethernet cable.
Disabling and then re-enabling my Nvidia network devices(onboard ports)
Uninstalling the Nforce drivers and reinstalling them
Different network drivers
Pressing the little reset button on the back of the modem

None of this resets the IP to the correct one.

The only thing that seems to work is TIME. After about 2-3 hours the modem finally finds the correct IP if I leave the computer on and go do something else it will eventually find the correct IP.

This never happened in XP no matter how much I would crash. So, is this a Vista issue or is my cable modem bad?

Re: 169 IP address won't clear in Vista

Check the device manager to make sure your network card has a driver. Check to see if it is enabled. Uncheck IPv6. Only use IPv4. Make sure it is set to obtain both IP and DNS. Reboot. You might want to shutdown and cycle your router. A bad router can also cause this error. Test with another computer.

Re: 169 IP address won't clear in Vista

Hi urgod,
you can try this open your network settings select tcp/ip in that select advance in the add defult gateway and add your modems interface ip address. Also you can add yours ISPS DNS server address in the DNS pane.

This should get you connected to the internet.

Hope this Helps

Cheers!!
