Downloading Video into Windows Media Player Problem

Dell tech gave me this website to solve a problem about downloading a video into Windows Media Player. I was expecting to get an actual tutorial, not just other peoples problems (as you call a forum). I downloaded a Google video and it went into MP4 format. I do not have an MP4, MP3 or other recording device. I wanted it in Media Player. Dell told me to transfer it to media player, but it said it did not recognize MP4 format, so it didn't transfer and won't play.

Do you have an actual tutorial (not forum) on this subject? If so, how do I access it? This is a new computer with VISTA installed. To say the least, I HATE IT. It has not worked properly since installed. It is so complicated trying to get results. Dell has tried repeatedly, but nothing works.... Now they want me to do complete system recovery by reinstalling the Operating System and Drivers discs that came with the computer. It should have been installed correctly in the first place. VISTA - state-of-the-art? I don't think so!

I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to do.. but I just finished a build myself and Windows Media Player would not play like half of the movies from my old system.. you need something called a Codec pack.. they have like packs that have all the updates you need.. so you can basically play EVERYHTING possible.. Heres a link, don't worry about it, just download it, and the install is fast and painless.. restart ur PC, or WMP and any movie you throw at any player, it will work.. Read the info to the left.. it basically explains that after this pack.. you'll be set. any videoplayer you use will be able to play just about everything.. Cool. Here is it.. What I am trying to do is upload a Music Video into Windows Media Player. I had it before, but when old computer crashed, it got lost and was unable to retreive it. Every time I try, it goes through either You Tube or My Space. I just want the video, so I can play it at my leisure, instead of waiting 45 minutes for it download. Is there another way to obtain and upload it into the Windows Media Player? I even entered the title and group's name in addres bar, but that didn't work either. I even tried to send it to myself as an attachment, but it still went through You Tube. Help!

You don't upload into Windows Media Player - Media player just 'loads' it from your HD. However, media files are compressed to save space, and in order to view them you need a codec (compressor Decompressor file) to allow Windows Media Player to know how to decompress it correctly to play it.

Install the Codec from the link that Brink provided and that should solve your inability to play the file.

Then the Video from Google should play just fine in Windows Media Player.

I downloaded Codec, but it didn't seem to help. I even tried the Real Player Super Pass, but when I uploaded the video, it went into Real Player. It did not give any options for Windows Media Player. At least I have the video, but not where I preferred it to be. I even tried to transfer it to a DVD, but everytime I tried, it kept telling me to download a program, which I did twice. Maybe I just know how these things work....

No offense, but the term *upload* refers to taking a video from your computer and sending it away - as in to another web site.

The term *download* refers to doing the exact opposite - getting a video from another website / computer and placing it on your local computer.

neither has to do with playing videos in Windows Media Player. However, when you installed RealPass, which is a system like the iTunes store to buy audio and video content and watch them, it also installed RealPlayer - and now that program has become the default video and audio player on your machine.

Without using the words upload or download, can you tell us *exactly* what you are attempting to accomplish?

A few years ago I had a music video, received as an email attachment, and transferred it to Windows Media Player. When my old HP computer crashed I lost it. My friend told me about the Google Video website. I wanted to get the video again, back in Windows Media Player. This new Dell/Vista already came with Real Player program, but I understood that the Super Pass had more features. I have the video in Real Player, but I wanted it in Media Player, plus I wanted a DVD - in case it crashed again. I was under the impression that Codec pac would give me options. I don't know what else to do... ccdolos

OK, so the video you are trying to 'get' - is it still on a web page, or have you already managed to get the entire video downloaded onto your computer?

If it is still on a web page, and you want it to play in Windows Media Player, then you'll have to go back into WiMP and configure it to be your default music and video player.

If it is on your Hard Drive somewhere (and I don't mean a link to it I mean the *entire* video) then you just need to find it, right click it and choose play in Windows Media player.
