Re: networking vista and xp sp1 computers with crossover wire?

Have a look there: Windows Vista Help: Set up a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network

It explains how to set up a ad-hoc network, then follow the link to share files.
Hope it helps.

Hi Bobis,

What type of network card are you using with Vista? Only some devices can support crossover and its not a Vista issue.

Steven

Nope -
Quote:
Ad hoc networks can only be wireless, so you must have a wireless network adapter installed in your computer to set up or join an ad hoc network
A crossover cable is definitely not wireless.

Re: networking vista and xp sp1 computers with crossover wire?

Funny thing, i did not read the windowshelp content in english but found and posted it.
In France we call ad-hoc connection a wired (crosswire) connection between 2 computers, kwowing that it could be also a wireless ad-hoc if it is stipulated.
Ahah maybe one day the same word in different langages will mean the same thing though ad-hoc is a latin word meaning more or less "link"

Re: networking vista and xp sp1 computers with crossover wire?

Understandable - I just happened to know that in terms of wireless ad-hoc was 'borrowed' as a term for this situation.

ALso, I thought ad-hoc actually meant 'temporary'....thanks for telling me what it means in reality.

By that definition ad-hoc is the same as using a crossover cable as well, and also included the many other ways you could connect computers - USB, FireWire, Serial ports, Parallel port, etc....all those are ad-hoc. So, no worries- it was a n honest mistake.
