Download speeds much slower than my xp comp...

Hey everybody!
I've been getting very slow download speeds on vista and have done everything I could to fix it. I have disabled the tcp auto tuning following this guide, turned off the QoS thing following this guide, turned off my phishing filter and firewall, switched over to a static IP, and maybe some other stuff i cant remember but in the end I still get terrible download speeds compared to my computer that runs XP

I went to speedtest.net to make sure I wasnt crazy...

Vista: ~750 download
XP: ~11600 download
the upload and ping were the same.

Both computers are wireless (same distance from router) but I think that my be where the problem lies...
I have a linksys wireless pci card and they apparently dont have drivers for my card for 64 bit vista, so I found this post and was able to get a driver to get my card working and get online. Im not saying this is the problem but just throwing it out there just incase it may be.

So my question is what could be the cause of my slow downloading and what can I do to fix it?

Hi sloganpwns, Welcome to the Vista forums.

Perform a speedtest with firewall and AV disabled.

Re: Download speeds much slower than my xp comp...

As stated above turn off your firewall, and antivirus if you still get slow speeds you could have spyware/malware. Reboot into safemode and rerun your Speed Test. Also understand that when you are doing a speed test on a website you are relying on the network traffic over that route in the internet at that time. Your ISP should provide you with a form of speed test, whether a FTP site or a web interface. Try this out and let us know how it goes!

Re: Download speeds much slower than my xp comp...

Just turning off my firewall by itself I was able to get an increase of 42kbps. But I don't want to surf around the net without it on. So I guess I gotta take the good with the bad in this case.

Disabling IPv6 might help a tad.

Re: Download speeds much slower than my xp comp...

Thanks for all the advice guys but it is still running way slower than my xp computer.

I have turned off IPv6, dont have a AV program, and would hope I dont have any spyware considering I just built the computer a few days ago and have basiclly only downloaded TF2.

I did some more research and it seems that people are having issues with running XP and vista on the same network. Does anyone know about this? Im not really sure what I'm doing when I mess with my router settings though.

Go to the advanced tab of your wireless device and check if mode is set to 802.11 "G" or B&G"
