Internet speed fractured in Vista!

Right now I have XP Pro SP3 on 1 laptop and Vista Ultimate on another I have an ADSL 2+ Internet connection

With the XP machine I get 28000+kbs down and 750+ up, using the same connection just swapping the net cable Vista does 9000+ down and 750+ up.

I have tried every "Netsh" combo detailed here and elsewhere with nil result what can be wrong with Vista?

Re: Internet speed fractured in Vista!

Get a newer NIC driver. Disable IPv6 in the NIC settings.

I have the latest Realtek RTL8168B/8111B Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) driver and stopped IPv6 in favour of IPv4 no change!

Re: Internet speed fractured in Vista!

Try setting the speed to 100 Mbps / full duplex instead of auto. Try disabling your firewall and anti-virus and see if they are causing problems with downloading.

Re: Internet speed fractured in Vista!

Thanks for your assistance tried both your suggestions, I run Eset Security so turned it off, if anything changing the speed seemed marginally slower.

Re: Internet speed fractured in Vista!

In Power Options, do you run High performance option?
I run Eset too, did you disable both Windows firewall and Defender?

Re: Internet speed fractured in Vista!

Yes full power option, ESS disables native firewall as for defender it's not the easiest to turn off! I've removed it from the registry run, it does not appear in msconfig and or any running services or processes so I think I nailed that sucker too!

MY XP system is nearly the same as the Vista system in terms of AV and firewall, I can rule out the modem as I only swapped the net cable from one to the other.

Google produces a lot of complaints about internet speed with Vista, now I have to say that my system with the internet does not seem slow! but this could be due to the processor power

Re: Internet speed fractured in Vista!

Do you have a non-Vista computer to test the internet speed with?

My Vista x64 Ultimate network performance is the same as XP x64.

Cabling
NIC drivers
NIC settings
router problems
Firewire and anti-virus interference

Your CPU is GHz and your network is Mhz. I doubt the CPU performance is the problem unless your CPU is running at 100%. Turn on the gadget with CPU/RAM usage.

Are you using a CAT 5, 5e or 6 cable. I use on CAT 6 for 1 Gbps. The backbone from second floor to basement is CAT 6 plenum grade solid core shielded. 5e is minimum for 1 Gbps.

Firewall and anti-virus can cause issues. Make sure they are disabled.

Did you try directly to the modem? Bypass your router. Maybe the router has issues.

Re: Internet speed fractured in Vista!

Yes! my XP machine conected to the same cat cable and same route does over 28000+ kbs down and 700+ up.

This is why I know it must be a bottle neck in Vista

I'll check the other items you mention

Re: Internet speed fractured in Vista!

XP on same computer rules out cabling and router issues. I would check speed, duplexing, and drivers.
