wired vs. wireless

I have two computers, one is running Xp home and the other is running Vista home premium. I thinking about setting up a home network. My main objective is to get the Xp machine hooked up to the inter-net for the kids. I am new to the network hook up stuff. I just added a pci network card to the Xp machine with out to much difficulty. Now my next step is to get it on the internet. If a home network is the way to go then I am all for that. If not what way is best. Next big question is do I use a wired or wireless router. Which is more secure? Is speed effected using either a wired or wireless router? My main goal here is to have the fastest speed possible and with the best security protection available. So is wired better, faster or is wireless. Right now I do not have any hardware that is wireless, so I really dint need a wireless setup. Although the wife will be finishing up her bachelors degree on-line, but she will have to make a once a month visit to the campus for a face to face meeting and they require a laptop with certain specs. and that has wireless capability. But this is not in the near future, about a year away for that. Would it be better to go wireless now or wait for some new and faster wireless technology. Thanks for all the help.
