Vista - unidentified network - local access only

I apologize in advance. I have scrolled through pages and pages of posts here and tried to find my solution. I must repost this issue for me.

I had this issue after building my rig and it miraculously fixed itself one day when I powered the computer on.

It worked for a few months.

Then I inadvertantly put my computer into hibernation or sleep, instead of powering it off, like I normally do.

Well, Vista didn't like that.

So now I am offline again.

Parts:
Vista Home Premium x64
linksys wireless g router. wrt54gs
cable modem.
asus extreme gamer mobo with dual nividia NIC on board.
most current drivers for everything.
most current firmware for router.
restarted everything a billion times.
unpluged, replugged, etc. too.
uninstalled NIC/reinstalled
let it assign a driver too.
dhcp is disabled
public or private, network is a no go.

auto config or keyed in ip info, no go.

disabled ipv6, no help

No matter what I get the same result:
unidentified network
access: local only

ipconfig shows media state, disconnected for moste everything.
cannot ipconfig renew, as it says that nothing is in the right status to do this.
cannot ipconfig release as it encounters an error.

typed in vista explode, stupid vista wont even do that.

I have a copy of xp pro x64. I am seriously doing my best to avoid installing it, because I would like vista to work, but This is the second time I am encountering no internet with vista.

I have plugged it directly to the modem, still has the exact same issue so the router is not involved with the issue.

It can only be:

1. a settings issue
2. a NIC issue
3. a Vista issue

I can't remember how to copy out of a cmd box to get my ipconfig on here.

any suggestions on what to try?

I have tried all these options also and then some! I have ran through and tried the netsh reset etc... examples, and have fulled uninstalled all AV / Firewalls and have properly configured my Vista firewall.

I am honestly stumped on this. I have spent over 6 hours on this and it is driving me nuts, someone must have a solution!

I solved the issue after another hour of tinkering with it. Here is what I did, and I think it's a solid fix!

Go to your "Local Area Connection" and right click. Click on "Properties". Once the window opens un-check "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP / IPv6)".

Once deselected, please select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4)". Click on "Properties". Tick the little bubble that says "Obtain an IP address automatically".

Go down where you see the gateway settings. Tick the small bubble that says "Use the following DNS server address:". Please use the following settings:
These are Yahoo.com DNS settings and I have been using them for 5 years now. After you set all these settings, reboot the PC and try to ping a website. It should work.

If not, I am fresh out of ideas, this fix worked for me, hope it works for you!

Yep, good trick including for those who can't use windows update when they use a weird proxy from their ISP.
I proposed few times this solution but unfortunately many people refuse to use these DNS thinking that they could spy their connection which is totally wrong of course.
DNS are from Level 3 Communications

I have just had the same problem on two other PCs in the same LAN, and the above fixed it for them too. One is Vista 32 bit, the other XP Home 32. I'm looking suspiciously at my new D-Link DI-724GU router.

Another thing you can try spider is to do a winsock reset. Here is how, in start search type in CMD, then right click the command prompt icon that comes up and run as administrator. Once you are in DOS then type this command: netsh winsock reset then hit enter. This will reset the winsock catalog in your Vista and you will need to restart afterwards.

Try this amongst the other things listed here.

I was unfortunate to have the same problem and as you have done searched everywhere for a solution. In desperation I decided to uninstall NORTON INTERNET SECURITY PROTECTION from my Laptop with the NORTON REMOVAL TOOL and low and behold before the removal was complete all my problems were solved, hope this helps

Of course, that only works if you have Norton installed in the first place....
