| Vista Home Premium 32bit | DEP Problems Vista Home Premium, 32bit: I've read the tutorials here on how to enable DEP (Data Execution Prevention), but there are a few problems. First of all, there are two locations where different DEPs applications can be changed or turned off/on. The first one resides in the 'Advanced System Settings' > 'Performance' > Data Execution Prevention' tab. The two choices here are: Use DEP for Windows programs & Use DEP for all programs. Mine was set by default to the former, but when changed to the latter, web pages would no longer load ("server not found" or "unable to load..." So I had to reset to the default level. Q: What causes the problem? Is there a solution? Isn't my comp. better protected with DEP enabled for all programs? DEP's second residence is in IE > 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced' tab under 'Security.' The options here are to check or not box saying 'Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks.' The tutorial here tells me to right click on the IE7 exe. file, but I can't find it. Right clicking on IE in menu brings up 'Run as Admin' prompt then redirects/connects to 'hp.desktop.aol.com.' But by the time I get to the 'Enable memory protection...' box, it's grayed out & won't let me check it. Research says this is disabled by default. This is a new desktop. Shouldn't this DEP be enabled as well? Please help the dummy. |

| Vista x64 Ultimate | Re: DEP Problems Some of my applications don't support DEP. You can either disable DEP for those applications. Some motherboards have hardware DEP feature. Does your board? |

| Vista 64-bit Ultimate Win7 64-bit Ultimate XP SP3 32-bit Pro | Re: DEP Problems Hello hermit. Welcome to the forums! This is from OPTION TWO of the tutorial... Look at it again! 1. Open the Start Menu. 2. Click on All Programs and right click on Internet Explorer, then click Run as administrator. NOTE: If you cannot get IE7 to open using step 2, then click on All Programs and Accessories. Next, right click on Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) and click Run as administrator instead. WARNING: If you do not use Run as administrator, the Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks option will be grayed out in steps 5 and 6 below. DEP is best left enabled; re-read the entire tutorial and see if you missed something. I hope this helps you. PS, you're not a dummy we all have to learn! later Ted |

| Vista Home Premium 32bit | Re: DEP Problems Mike: Yes, my system supports DEP. Ted: I have done it both ways in your suggestion (as the tutorial specifies), but I get the same result either way: when right clicking IE > Run as Admin > I'm redirected / connected to hp-desktop.aol.com. When I am at the 'Enable memory protection ....' box, it is still grayed out.Can you speak to the issue of pages not loading or server not found when DEP in enabled for ALL programs & services? My thanks to you both for your help. Jeff |
