Wireless lag spikes and gaming :(

Ok, Im sure you have all read posts about this problem.
Basically im quite upset and angry at the fact i just bought a beautiful new machine, thinking ill be able to finally game propelly, to only find that..
I get these 2-5seconds where my gaming ( World of Warcraft ) freezes completely.
Basically from what i've read its something to do with Vistas wireless that searches for a new and better connection every 60seconds.
My computer is NOT connected to the router, it has a 3/5 signal strength and my ping is OK. Its just these lag spikes that are killing me.
I've tried VISTA Anti-LAg and the WLAN optimizer. Nothing works at all.
Anyone have ANY other suggestions as to what i can do to get rid of these 2-5second lag spike/freezes with my gaming?
Im running VISTA Premium x64bit...
All help would be fantastic..
Thank you

What controller do you use ?
Check the controller properties (WWM deactivated, mode: G only)
If you receive signal from other networks, remove them.
The most important is to use the prog delivered with your drivers and not the Vista one.

You can also try another channel. If you have people using the same channel in the area it can cause interfearance.

I've been struggeling to fix this problem for some time now, and like you I've tried everything, and sadly, if you've hit the same dead end as me, there's only a handfull of options you've got left.

1) Try moving your pc and modem closer to each other, I've discovered the
vista lagg issue only manifests when the signal is below a certain percentage.
If moving your pc/modem is not an option, you could try using a repeater to
increase signal strength to above the critical percentage. Note however, that I'm
the only one (as far as I know) making mention of the signal strength aspect of
the problem, and I could always be wrong, so please take no measures you can't
easily undo.

2) The obvious solution, use a wire, instead of wireless. (This is not an option for
most of the people having the problem.)

3) If an ordinary wire is not an option for you, you could use one of these:

dLAN Highspeed Starter Kit

this thing is a powerline adapter, it will use your household electric wiring
to create a connection with your modem. Vista should see this as an ordinary
wired connection, and not use it's wireless "utility". This is not a very cheap
solution though.. a basic set will cost you about 60-70 euro's.

4) Install Xp, this could also be a fairly expensive option if you don't already have
a copy lying around, if you consider it an option to begin with. (You might not
want to give up on vista altogether.)

5) Pray/hope that Microsoft will finally see the light and fixes this glaring bug.

As I said earlier, One thing I've discovered about the vista lag issue, is that it shows up only when the wireless signal is below a certain strength. For me the mark was at about 40% signal strength. This means that increasing the signal strength, should stop the lag from kicking in.

What this also means is, that somewhere in vista, there has to be a value that indicate's this percentage. (might be in the registry?, sorry I'm a bit of a noob here..) This in turn means that there is a chance you can change that percentage to 0%, effectively killing the lagg issue, since it won't search for new networks unless it has no signal at all.

I measured the signal strenght using Vista Anti Lag's built in gauge ( you'll have to keep refreshing it though) and used the line "ping Google -t" (no qoutes)
in cmd.exe. The cmd command will allow you to see the lagg spikes properly.

Heya,
ive seen this [H]ard|Forum - View Single Post - Vista + Wireless + 60 sec lag spikes = SOLVED spammed throughout this site repeatedly regarding this issue, and nobody mentions if it acutally helps (other than the spammer).

so can someone verify if it works. I myself have tried it and it doesnt do a darn thing for me. it makes the lag just a second or two shorter on some steam games, but the lag is still there every minute, on the minute. I'm assuming that i'm just doing something wrong, but i'm honestly not sure.

so, am i doing something wrong or is this just bs spam?

Im sorry you 're still havin the problem. I had been dealing with this lag spike for 2 years visiting multiple sites to no avail. But this site did work for me. The things i did different this time was use the Windows XP drivers instead of Vista drivers for the wireless adapter card(making sure all old drivers are deleted) unchecking the "connect to a more preferred network" in the properties. I also use WLAN optimzer + Vista anti lag at the same time.

It works, I've just used it.

When I had XP, you disable "Windows Zero Configuration" or Wireless, whichever. The Hard Forum simply replicates the solution for Vista it seems. Hassle of turning it off and on every restart though.

TYSM for that tutorial... its been almost a year and through WoW and Spore it would do a lag spike nonstop... but the tutorial fixed it so tyvm! :D:D:D
