Can You network vista and Xp?

I am tring to play a game with my GF via a network. I cannot setup one with her.
I have windows Vista home edition premeium and she has xp pro. I want to play a C&C game with her. Would you give me an idea how? Thanks. I will try whatever you suggest. We both have a wireless adaptor and i also have the cat-5 wire.

Re: Can You network vista and Xp?

The normal setup involves a switch, and the two computers are connected to it.

If you have no switch, you can use a "cross-over" ethernet cable. These are different than normal ethernet cables and are identified specifically as cross-overs.

I do not know enough about wireless, but there's a "ad hoc" setup you could also try.

tried all of that, I don't know what I am doing wrong. I see that the computer is connected in the game but no one can join.

Re: Can You network vista and Xp?

There are firewall considerations. Vista's firewall is on by default and fairly restrictive. It should prompt you when an app requests to open a port.

Re: Can You network vista and Xp?

Are you getting a specific error?

I don't know C&C, so I don't know how it handles networking. It should be TCP/IP, and depending on how C&C's network setup works you may need to be on the same IP range. If it uses CD keys, it may require each person to have a unique key.

No offense,. but you've provided no information other than the game and that you're on wireless. We don't know anything about your computer specifications, the workgroup both machines are on, the router / WAP manufacturer, the wireless cards in each computer, who is hosting the game or if you are attempting to both go online and play as a team, and when asked questions you say you tried all that and it didn't work without specifying *what* didn't work, what error messages you received, etc.

Remember, we cannot sit at your computer and see what is going on - so we need you to tell us what is going on.

Re: Can You network vista and Xp?

hm i think his problem is that he cannot establish a network between the two devices, as in they may be connected to the network but they do not recognise each other or show each other up on the network,
i had this problem many times during my summer job as a call out guy for an it department in an office block... it was really annoying, there was different companies on each floor, with different networks(XP or vista) and i couldnt find a way to connect to the wireless network, needless to say i just installed XP and have a dual booting system on my laptop so that when i need to connect to an XP network i boot into XP and vice versa.
But thats how i solved the problem and but i am sure there must be another way, ill trall through the forums again to see if i can save me some HDD space!!!
