Solved encryption

New Member
I have just added a new router on my computer. I am still having trouble with a laptop upstairs. On the laptop utility card it says encryption disabled. Is this a problem with my computer or their laptop? If it is what can I do? I just had my system crash and had it fixed at Future Shop. Everything works fine but the upstairs computer. I am new at this so if someone could explain this to me I would appreciate it. Colin

Hello Colin, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It may be referring to the router's wireless encryption option. Most are not turned on my default. It should be under your Wireless Settings Setup in the router settings. Use WPA2 if available. If not, then WPA or WEP.

Go through your router's manual for detailed instructions on how to do this for that brand and model.

It will be for the router that you will enable the WPA2, WPA, or WEP encryption on through Internet Explorer with the router's IP address on whatever computer it is directly connected to.

Thanks again Brink, I think I have my head around it. Is it as simple as with it disabled anyone handy can pick up the internet and with it enabled you would need a password. Colin

Almost. It's just that the data flowing between the wireless connection is either encrypted or not. If not, anyone with the correct program can see (sniff) what you are typing and can get whatever information you typed along with access to your network connection. If encrypted, they will just see a garbled mess instead and will be of no use to them. I would recommend using WPA/WPA2 encryption instead of WEP. WEP is not as good.
