Re: Vista Unable to see XP in LAN

Have you created any shares on your laptop?
You are also looking at the wrong screen.
Just click on the network icon to show the networked pcs. When you click on it you should see something like this.

Re: Vista Unable to see XP in LAN

Hi beh007,

You also need to create identical users on both machines and set passwords for both.

the other thing to check is permissions, on the vista machine you have to set both sharing and security permissions. hope this helps

Re: Vista Unable to see XP in LAN

Go into the Ethernet controller on the XP computer, click on the TCP/IP properties, then go to the WINS tab and enable Netbios of TCP/IP if it is not already enabled.

Then set your shares. If the XP computer asks for a user name and p/w, it is usually what you use to log into your Vista computer.

Re: Vista Unable to see XP in LAN

Try renaming both PC's to workgroup. As vista is very particular about this. Vista prefers that you change the name to what is already named. See if that helps.

Re: Vista Unable to see XP in LAN

I'm having the same problem. Trying to connect an old XP laptop via Ethernet to my Vista machine. Set IP and stuff up and it says it's connected, but I can't do anything like can't even ping.

It worked instantly a couple of months ago on another XP machine, just connected them and it seemed to pick each other up instantly, but it's just not happening atm.

Re: Vista Unable to see XP in LAN

A couple of things to check. First make sure the XP machine has the LLTD responder. Here is the site to download.
Network Map in Windows Vista does not display computers that are running Windows XP
Next; Firewall and firewall settings. Norton and CA are known to have issues with networking computers. I was using CA firewall and anti-virus and it was giving me fits so I switched. Now no problems. Make sure your firewall is allowing access to network. Make sure you have set files you want to share set to sharing.

Re: Vista Unable to see XP in LAN

Managed to get it working. Missed a firewall option that kept the laptop hidden in Zone Alarm, so changed that and can send files over to the Vista machine.

Though I was attempting it at 2am last night, so probably explains why ^^
