Error: "There may be a problem with one or more network adapters on this computer."

Since I have been home for holiday break, I've been having incessant connectivity issues on my relatively new gateway laptop. I see frequent, random disconnections with no real explanation. Most often I get the "problem with network adapters" error, but I have seen a few others that tell me there are no detected networks or that I simply "cannot connect to wireless network." I've read some threads on this forum that address similar issues, but I have yet to find a solution. Currently I can't even connect through ethernet and I am completely and utterly baffled; in truth it has been all I can do not to throw my router, laptop, and myself out of my second floor window.

I use a NETGEAR WGR614v7 router with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS.

I'd like to get this resolved before I return for spring semester without internet connection, so please offer some insight as soon as possible. I just hope this isn't a result of some hardware failure. Thank you.

Hi Elijah, and welcome to the vista forums

I believe that this model router has a few compatibility problems with vista, check that the firmware in your device is the latest available

Have a look here for netgear's troubleshooter for this particular model ...

Thanks a lot for your reply barman! When I got home from work I had connection so I took advantage of the window of opportunity before I lost it. I managed to run the setup wizard and make sure all of my settings were configured properly. Since then I have no disconnections.

Nope. I lose. Connection worked excellently for three hours or so with only one disconnection, but at around 7am I'm unexpectedly back to the same old rap. "Windows cannot connect to NETGEAR" because... "Wireless association failed because Windows did not receive any response from the wireless router or access point." Ya know, regardless of the fact that I always have full signal. I know that the firmware is up-to-date, I checked it earlier.

It would be nice if Vista were compatible with SOMETHING. Here's to hoping that Windows 7 won't be the same pile of ....

Hello Elijah,

Sorry to hear you're still having problems, I can assure you that Vista does work with a lot of hardware, but that is not of any help to you where you have one of those that it has problems with, and I can understand your frustration

M$ did produce a tool for the testing routers, it should still be available here ...

Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool

Another "fix" for your particular error (not M$ approved ;)) was to use firefox rather that IE as this often cured the issue.

Another option to try is disabling IPv6 in the adaptor settings

Yet another is to uncheck the "Allow windows to shut down this device to save power" option in the device driver.

Hopefully one of these will allow you to surf more reliably
