My ISP average speed is around 4Mb right!
In the evening they cap the speed so i get around 20Kbs/sec download speed.
But right at this moment when i am trying to download Adobe software it's coming down at 5Kbs/sec...

I ask whats the point of paying x for something i don't actually get 2/5ths of the day... I am supposed to be capped if i use over 100Gb a month. At this rate i won't get to 50Gb a month.

When you say "Download Adobe software" is that from Adobe, or off bittorrent? Many ISP's automatically throttle torrent traffic.

ISPs cap from afternoon to around midnight because it's the "peak" time for Internet usage, and it's all part of fair usage policies, and is also a pain in the rear.

I'm not too bad with mine. I'm with Eclipse Internet and have their Home Pro package. It's up to 24Mbps, but because of the distance I am from the phone exchange, I'm getting 16.5Mbps. I get 50GB a month limit, and free downloads from 11pm to 9am that don't count towards my monthly limit.

It shouldn't be limited to that speed though. The slowest I get in peak times is around 200 to 300KB/s, but average around 500KB/s, and after 11pm I get the full speed.

You should ring them up, like that Baxter said. If you're not happy with the service, just have a look around at some other ISPs.

Most ISP's Cap at night as that is when many users come home and start downloading lots of data (p2P, torrents, naughty stuff etc) They need to make sure everyone can use the available bandwidth so voila. Cap that stuff

I've not come across any ISPs in England that cap at night, only in the day time up until 10pm/11pm and uncap during the night. Like I have free uncapped downloads after 11pm.

Not all of 'm cap. Depends on how much bandwidth is available in a specific area around an exchange. If they have limited bandwith available, but many subscribers they cap sometimes till they upgrade from the exchange and have it resolved. Google has advised a while back that some tools available online to do tests and find out what exactly the ISP is capping. Could be just torrents or other. I'm trying to remember where on google you can check it though.

I think I just found 'm here at M Lab

Use tools running on M-Lab to test your Internet connection. | M-Lab

You will have to phone BT and "have a go" at them.

If they sort it out then all well and good, but if they don't then i would suggest having a look around at other ISP's

BT say it's part of they're Fair usage policy. But i said to them what about the fact that i only get a download speed as low as 5Kbs/sec when i am trying to update my computer. 'You'll have to do it in the mornings when there are less people on'.
Lets get straight to the point here....

What's the point, when you don't get what you pay for....Access to the internet without restrictions. Because that's what they are restrictions on your usage.
If they are not able to keep up with demand therefore, they should not be supplying Broadband of more than 2Mbs to share it out for all....

As far as i am concerned i'd be happy just having 2 Mbs continuous rather than 4Mbs (avg) Half of the time...
Why should anybody have 50 Mbs service when they only use it 10% of the time they have it. It's all a bit stupid to me.
It's just a simple case of Greed. I had the 20 Mb service but that was pointless as they capped me to 6 mb service during the day. So don't you all get it! 'YOU DON'T GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR'

Railfrog
Sorry but i've only been with BT for 2 months come back to me in 10 Months time...Also why should i have to phone BT to wind them up just because they don't give me what i pay for.

What have you actually signed up for?
Have they said you WILL get speeds of xxMBs or is it an UP TO speeds of xxMBs?

If it's a WILL then you have them by the short and curlys. If it's an UP TO then that is exactly what it is...UP TO that speed, and that could be a long way off the speed you want.

It really doesn't matter what the speeds are...If I am only getting a download limit of 5 Kbs , there's no point to it. I can't use anything like BBC iPlayer or ITV Player as the program you are trying to watch continually stops every 5 seconds.
