I have changed my DNS to that 208.222.000.00 ? thing.
has anyone else done this?
I don't go anywhere nasty but I do alot of https connections.
can they see or keylog anything?

I signed up with the website but I don't know if it does any good.

Re: DNS what is it really?

Out of curiosity, what were you hoping to gain by signing up with these people?

Can they "see" in the sense of can they tell where on the internet you're going? Absolutely. You're asking their servers to resolve names to IPs. They could certainly inspect that activity, should they feel like it.

Can they keylog you? Not unless you installed something from them (while running as an admin) and the entire organisation is very shady indeed.

It sounds like you've got misgivings

Re: DNS what is it really?

I have been using OpenDNS for some time without any issues whatsoever, the following is an independent review of the service.

OpenDNS - Full Review - Reviews by PC Magazine

If you only wish to improve on the sometimes less than perfect ISP supplied DNS servers you can simply use the Two addresses they provide without any need to sign up.

You only need to sign up if you wish to use the additional Safe surfing options

Re: DNS what is it really?

I've used opendns for years, it's a great backup for my ISP's dodgy DNS servers.

Hello Z3r010,

I'm on the same ISP as you - Is it just co-incidence we both use OpenDNS?

Re: DNS what is it really?

I gather your question is more about privacy than about DNS, so here goes.

Don't consider ANY surfing as anonymous. Your US-based ISP is required for some time now to log all activity (Yes, I said, *required* as in law).

This info is supposed to only be available via a court order.

The only way to avoid such pitfalls is to strong encrypt your datastream to a system that acts as an anonymous proxy. This, too, is subject to the same laws, even though some claim they will not release your info. (They have to know your IP info, else you couldn't connect )

Re: DNS what is it really?

My comcast braodband does not interact well with my Linksys wrt54g router but when I use the OpenDNS addresses... all is well.

The only down side to that is that I can't print on my wireless printer... but that's an entirely new thread
