"unplugged" Network cable

Hey, i'm about to explode with rage because this is VERY ANNOYING. EVERYTHING is plugged in, the internet on my computer is working fine. However my laptop says "local and internet connection" but only displays the 5 bars now if I go into network configuration. It says everything is connected, yet ALSO says the LAN cable is unplugged, which it isn't. I originally thought this might be a problem with the laptop itself but my dad brought his home from work and it doesn't work either... I've done pretty much everything you can think of doing to fix this problem but nothing is working, so PLEASE help, i'm at the point of begging now =[

Is the network cable plugged into a live switch or router?

Did you try changing to another port on the router?

I had a port go bad on a router once.

The router might be going bad...

Well , can't really understand as what you mean when you say that Internet is working and Local Area connection says cable unplugged. Are you on wireless internet ? , A Local Area conenction can say cable unplugged if :

1) The cable is truely unplugged
2) The duplex setting on the card is not right
3) You are on wireless and the Local Area Connection has not been disabled.

Now as you say that your dad has connected his laptop to the router and gets the same message on the LAN connection , then either the cable or the port on the router is bad , so you can try to switch cables / port . If it is a wireless connection that you guys are trying to connect then please disable the LAN connection , If you are able to go onto the internet but geting Network cable unplugged , chances are that you need to change the duplex settings on the ethernet card. Search in google for that and you will get the steps. :)
