OK, first off I'm a newbie to this forum, so hello all. And I'm also pretty much a newbie to Vista also, but know XP alot, so should be able to go along with any help. Here's the problem:

I had someone move into my old office & his computer (Dell, Vista Home, 1gbRam, 160GBhd, nVidia network controller) is now going to be the one wired directly into the router & modem with the rest of the 3 comps in the house getting wireless signal as they had been for the past 2 years.

When I first plugged his comp in & installed the Netgear router from the disk, the install screwed up in that his comp was getting the internet cause it was plugged via ethernet, but the rest of the house couldn't cause there was no wireless signal. Also shown by the wireless light not being on on the router, but all the other were, power, LAN port4, & internet.

So I uninstalled the router since wasn't working correctly unplugged it all from the comp to restart fresh.

Went and did the install again, but now the wired in comp is not getting any kind of internet signal at all either being plugged directly into the modem, directly into the router, or even trying use one of the wireless USB adapters that are running on the other comps just fine, on it right now, but even that way there was something not allowing it to install correctly and get an internet signal, just kept saying can connect to a local network but not to the internet, rebuild this, blah blah blah.

Somehow/way the vista computer is not accepting an internet signal. It says it is connected to a Local Network, but then there is an Red X thru the next line that goes to internet, this is in the Network & Sharing Center. Also on the router (which now won't install from the disk cause says it can't find the Internet, but shows on the lights) all the correct lights are now lit up: power, wireless signal, Internet, & even the LAN port, but the key one, which is a "check mark" light, isn't cause it can't connect to the computer but router is doing it job, so its something on the computer.

I've tried rebuilding all the adapters, resetting IP address, unplugging and resetting all modems & routers at least 25 times with up to 45 minutes unplugged. I've had Comcast here 2 times, they said to unistall the nVIDIA Network Controller, reinstall it, id all of that, nothing. What the heck is going on? I've been fighting with this for over 30 days now and I just can't get it right. Can someone tell me how to make this piece of crap Vista comp work before I tell him to wipe the whole thing & put XP on it cause its done many other problems before also, but another time for that. Any & all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time and reading all of this, but I'm so frustrated just had to describe everything I've done.

Ok, I think i understand what you are trying to do. I am going to walk through this from the ground up. Shut everything off and unplug everything. There should be a reset button on your router. Do this. Connect your modem to your cable cord so you can get your internet service to your modem, next connect the ethenet cable from the modem to the routers ethernet port. On routers, there is one specific ethernet port specifically for the modem's connection. Make sure that you are connecting the cord into the right port.
Next, power on your modem and wireless router at the same time. Wait for them both to completely start up, and try to connect to the router.

Let us know how this goes,
Ben

---okay---I had a similar problem when trying to make a NEW wireless-router work on our main-pc so that I can use my new laptop---I also redid all of the instructions zillions of times---no work!---(i even phoned the store-he said it may be a DUD)---but finally, I called the 1-800-number that is with the router/sheets---a person helped me (in India) step by step, very patient to re-configure the settings on the main pc + set-up my new one!---(I must have thanked him a million times)---now I have no problems at all---

peace

so no one can help me on this? cause its not the router & its not the modem, cause there is a wireless signal going thru the house & other comps can be plugged into the router. It is the computer, so someone help me out. it just tells me I'm connected to a local network, but have not to the internet. Please stop asking me mundane questions like that as everything is explained in the problem listing, so if you can't help for sure, please don't reply.
