Vista File Sharing

I am running Vista x64 on my desktop and have a laptop running XP. From the XP machine I am unable to ping the Vista PC, hence I am unable to access files. From Vista I am able to ping XP and can access all shared files but not the other way around.

The Vista PC is connected directly to my Linksys router. My XP laptop connects wireless. The interesting aspect is my router is 192.168.1.1 with a DHCP range from .100-.150, my XP laptop is 192.168.1.101 and my Vista PC is 192.168.123.200.

I am not sure how my Vista PC is on a different subnet outside of the DHCP range. I think is the main problem yet the Vista PC can see the XP machine. Both computers have no problems connecting to the internet. I have turned off all firewalls but still have had no success.

The Vista PC is a new Dell Studio XPS which was simply plugged into the network and was connected to the internet with no configuration. File and printer sharing have been enabled and it set on a private network. Both PCs are in the same workgroup.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Vista File Sharing

You need to allow the IP's through your firewall, Your need to setup your IP address's like this XP laptop: 192.168.1.101, Vista PC: 192.168.1.102 and allow 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.103 other wise if you don't allow the the number one up/down from the range the IP 's will be blocked and you wont be able to ping.

Re: Vista File Sharing

Sure that make sense but I am still trying to figure out how the Vista PC has an IP in a different subnet when it is connected to my router directly which is on the 192.168.1.x subnet.

If I assign a static IP to the Vista PC in the subnet as my router, I lose all connectivity on the PC.

Here is the ipconfig /all from the both PCs. Not sure why the Vista PC has a different default gateway than my router.

Re: Vista File Sharing

You are using IPv6 for your Vista computer and IPv4 for XP computer that's why you have a different default gateway, IPv6 has more bits in the IP address then IPv4 dose.
