Cannot Communicate with DNS server

2 weeks ago i brought a £450 brand new computer and ive been on the internet before with it all working on Sky broadband.
last friday we changed to broadband but they gave us the wrong router so they left us with that one and promised us a better newer one when they returned.
again the internet was fine and all working.
yesterday they brought us the router and i currently have 3 computers working on the network
my laptop
my brothers laptop
my brothers PC

my pc however, cannot connect to the internet anymore.
the problem i get is
"Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server(192.168.0.1)"
and it allows me to select the option to try to restart my network adapter, when i carry this out it goes back again to the same error or maybe without the word "Primary" in it.

Ive tried a lot of things such as using auto ip addressing such as DHCP and changing the DNS server to OpenDNS servers but the same problem continues to appear. its only since having the new router.

i dont have any firewalls running nor do i have IPv6 on at all anymore i removed the use of that too.

ive done a couple of Netsh commands in cmd but i cant offhand tell you which ones or how many times ive tried that.

the router im using is a D-Link DIR-615

im not sure what you guys can suggest that i havnt even already tried! ive already posted this problem on another forum too and they so far dont know what the cause or solution is im wondering if you guys may be able to lead me in the right direction.

i can ping my NIC card (wireless) but i cant ping the dns at all, no responses, or any other outbound address for that matter...

thanks in advance
and Hi im new here :)

The DNS would be outside the router. Try open a command prompt and

C: ping 192.168.0.1

If you do not receive any replies, the your computer will not be able to resolve addresses. You may need to check with your ISP to verify your DNS address(es). Also check if your ISP can see your router and if you have your router correctly set up.

** EDIT ** Oops - if you can't ping any ip addresses, it is either your set up or the ISP. Check both.

i get no reply at all no...
but surely if i enter the same DNS address(s) as my bro's pc and the other 2 laptops that are working it should be the same on my pc right?

My Computer

No. If you cannot ping the ip address, there's no way for it to connect to the dns (provided by your isp) to resolve the address.

BUT, are you saying your brother is in the SAME house using the SAME modem?

yes and this laptop is also connected to THAT network using the SAME DNS server

Okay, now we're talking. Is the router using any security? WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.?

Check your device driver to make sure there aren't any errors on your wi-fi adapter.

Latest drivers for your adapter?

If you have two adapters (one wi-fi and one not), please go to bios and disable the onboard non wi-fi adapter.

ok it has WPA2 security the settings are equal to my laptop on my pc as well so it shouldnt be any security settings. besides that im actually on the network... just locally only.

my device and drivers were up to date 3 days ago. when i was using old router. and the device is less then 2 weeks old.
and already disabled the local one :)

So if it has WPA2, have you installed the encryption key to your computer?

Why is your gateway the same as your DNS?

(also, do you have a 2nd nic card?)

Would you check your brother's pc to see if he has the same ip address for gateway and dns?

Gotta go home, but let me know...

I have never seen them the same, but I can always learn something new! LOL.

ive got no further with my problem.
i downloaded a driver update but it failed to install as the driver was already the latest unfortunatly.
ive attempted 2 change the dns however i found that all the dns's ive tried gives the same problem. the reason Vista gives is what i can see is totally correct but they have the solution wrong...

Cannot communicate with DNS server. doesnt even look throught it though, i cannot connect to the router and im not sure why it even connects to be honest.

it connects yet doesnt communicate with my router (D-Link DIR-615)

My Computer

im thinking it maybe be something called
"clone MAC address"
however im very unfamiliar with this term hahaha!
im just wondering if u guys think it may be something 2 do with that?
i had a problem where the dns was wrong on my laptop when i changed it...
but i still managed to get onto the router settings.
