File Sharing Between XP and Vista

I just purchased a new Toshiba laptop. It is 64 bit with Vista Home Premium.
Desktop is Compaq with XP. Connection between the two is cable direct connect through a Linksys router. Occasionally I do go wireless. Its a very simple network and its doesn't require any security since i am the only person that uses both computers.

Toshiba can read and write files on Compaq.

Compaq can see the Toshiba in its network places but when I double-click on it, I get a request for a username and password which I do not know what to respond to since I have no passwords set on the Toshiba.

I've set sharing on Toshiba C-drive and even turned off the Windows Firewall.

How do I turn the password prompt off or at least know what to respond.

Thank you to anyone who can help or point me in the right direction.

I suspect you are using homegroup. when homegroup is set up it generates a password. thats probably what it is looking for. If you dont remember it you can go into homegroup and generate a new one or change it

Hope this helps

This article only refers to Windows 7 ... I have Windows Vista and I see no reference to Home Group in the help files ... am I missing something?

No Problem Ken ... thanks for your help and time in any regard ...

Maybe this helps ...

When I go into MY COMPUTER in Vista (on the Toshiba), left click on C and right click and select SHARE..., I come up with the Toshiba Hard Drive (C) properties window.

At the bottom of this window in, the Password Protection section, it says "People must have a user account and password to access shared folders ... to change this use the Network and Sharing Center"

So I go there and find no reference to making this change. I think I am just missing something ...

That, I think, is the missing link ...

Can you take it from there ???

Continued Thanks for your help ..

Just got back from beating myself about the head. My problem is Im running win 7 so I have to do this frrom memory. Im also going ot see if I can grab someone with vista

Are you the only user (or trust all users) to proceed without a password?

If so open network and sharing>go to advanced settings>choose home or workgroup>turn off password protect. thats as clsoe as I can get from memory.

Hi Again Ken ..

No . :( . couldn't find it by your instructions from memory ... I'll wait patiently until someone else answers or you find someone currently running Vista.

I know the answer has to be something easy.

and BTW .. I am the only user so turning off PW protection is a fine solution for me.

Alan

Also .. I am getting a free copy of Windows 7 with the Toshiba ... wonder what you think of it compared to Vista?
