Network Keeps Switching between Private and Public

As the title says, my network connection keeps switching between public and private, despite my configuring it to a private network. Because of this, my PS3 is unable to connect (using laptop as media center to stream data to PS3).

We are using a DLINK DIR-615 at the moment.

I also have Linksys WRT54GS that I could switch back to, but I had problems with my laptop staying connected with that and we had the Dlink kicking around, so we swapped to see if my laptop would stay connected with it, and so far it has. Or atleast when it switches to "local only", it reconnects right away.

Anyway, my problem is that I'm trying to stream movies and music to my PS3. But whenever it flips to "public", I can no long stream the files. How can I get it to stay set as a private network?

Does this make any sense?

Edit to add:
Playing around with things, I've changed some firewall settings, but now when my PS3 is turned off, it changes back to a private network, and as soon as I turn it on, it flips to public.

Hello Trypnotized,
Welcome to vista forums!

Does your PS3 make the network private? A few google searches will give you the answer you desire.

Thanks for a response (and the welcome!)

My network is set to private, but when I turn my PS3 on, it then switches to public and keeps flipping back and forth and won't stay private. When I turn the PS3 off, it goes back to private. I've tried google searches to no avail. Unless, of course, you've found something that I didn't.

On the upside, I just finished installing TVersity, and it seems to be working fine and my network setup is no longer switching.

Perhaps this is something specific with trying to use WMP as the mediacenter? *shrug*

I have a 360 so im not sure on the network conectivity. Is it wired or wireless? And is your computer wired or wireless.

This could be caused by the ps3. Does it only change when you use your ps3?

Let us know,
Ben

It does seem to only happen when I kick my PS3 on, but also when my WMP11 is set up as media center. Since I've disabled WMP from sharing media and switched to TVersity, it doesn't seem to happen. Which is why I'm starting to wonder if it's something between the PS3 and WMP

Unfortunately, I don't have my 360 anymore to compare :(

But since the switch, it seems to have worked itself out... So long as I don't use WMP as my server, of course...

That being said, when I set WMP to share again, and turn on my PS3, poof: public and my PS3 pops with DNS server errors and my network is back to public.

Sorry I don't really have anything else to add (-.-)

Edit to add:
So, my daughter was watching a movie that's on my laptop via TVersity, and it seems it's not actually fixed.... My network switched to public and then also switched to "Local Only". I had the "Local Only" issue with my Linksys router as well and was under the assumption it had to do with Vista's scanning for a better connection and my router not being able to handle it (that's something I came across while trying to deal with that issue). The Linksys router had to be reset/unplugged and plugged back in to fix the issue and reconnet to my network. The DLink seems to reconnect itself after a bit.

And now it seems that my laptop will disconnect from the network, then reconnect itself after maybe 30 seconds or so. Kid gets about 20 minutes into a show then poog, disconnects and comes back but says the content cannot be displayed.

What would cause it to keep disconnecting? Signal strength and connection are "Excellent"...

Also, I forgot to answer a question: PS3 and laptop are both running wireless. PS3 can be wired, but transfer rate doesn't seem to be an issue as everything plays and connects fine, it's more a matter of maintaining the connection.

Edit again:
Found something that said to try going into cmd and typing "delete routing 0.0.0.0" ...will give this a go and see what happens. :-S

Edit:
"delete routing 0.0.0.0" did not work.
