Unnable to connect to wireless access point

Please help, we have a sony vaio laptop with wireless internet, it was all working fine until the 23/1/10 when the network connection would not connect. The network connection on our sony works at a relatives house ok.
We also have a Dell laptop with wifi and it connects ok on our network.
The only thing I can see wrong is that the network security key passphrase keeps changing in the Properties-Security dialog box.
The sony connects ok when it is hard wired to the router.
Both laptops have Vista home premium.

Hello,

Do you know the password for the wireless to access it?

If so, go into the network and sharing center, on the left column there will be an option to manage wireless networks / connections > click that and find your network that the sony can't connect to > high light and click remove at the top > now go back at the bottom right hand corner of the screen where the 2 screens are ( it probably has a red ex ) > click that and click connect to a network > now click your network and re-enter the password correctly. Hope this helps :)

Hi, thanks for the quick reply,
i have tried all this with no success,
the dell is still working after the reset, so the problem must be with a setting on the sony, but where to look????

no.
the laptop is connecting to the wifi network when it has wep encryption, but when i reset everthing to wpa or wpa2, it says attempting authaurisation.
I feel safer with the wpa2 encryption, so still no joy.
I have just installed vista service pack 2 and all the vaio up dates, still nothing.
could it have something to do with this number 802.11i, not sure what it is but read something in a forum relateing to it.

I'm not familiar with 802.11i but you should either be 802.11g or 802.11n or the router could be both. Honestly I haven't heard of i before. Whats the make and model of the laptop? I'm going to look for drivers. Also, how old is this laptop?

Ok, since a factory reset worked, more than likely what happed is windows automatically downloaded and installed a driver for you. Do NOT allow that. Windows update is the worst possible way to update drivers. It sucks.

If he or she wanted to do that, to disable Windows Update from finding and loading drivers without them knowing, would the disabling of the "Windows Update" Service be the way to do that?

No, the most effective way to fix this is to set Windows update to download all available updates but do NOT install them until the user accepts which ones to actually install...

Wouldn't that waste hard-drive space?
