Can ping, but cannot Browse?

Okay, So late yesterday, at about 7 PM, I was browsing the web, and tried to open facebook, but all I got was the loading thingie in Google Chrome. IT gave me a "Webpage is not available"

So I tried another website, google, and the same thing happened. I could not access any websites. So, I went and rebooted my router, and low and behold, I had my internet back! For about 10 minutes, then I lost the ability to browse again.

So I went into the Cmd prompt, and IPconfig'd I had no DNS suffix, but I still had an IP, Gateway, and all that jazz.

So I tried to ping 18.62.1.6 (Random IP Address that I think goes to MIT's website.)

And I got a response.

So I'm thinking this is some sort of DNS problem. All of the other computers in the house are operating fine. I also can see the network Icon in the taskbar say that I have Local and Internet Access. When I check the status of my Ethernet adapter, its got a fairly high number of packets being sent and recieved, and I'm completely stumped.

Ive tried:
Updating drivers
Ipconfig /dnsflush
ipconfig /release
Ipconfig /renew

Ive tried setting my system to using Googles Public DNS, to no avail.

And so Im stumped.

Vista 32 bit home basic
AMD Athlon X2 2.0ghz
4GB DDR2 pc 5300
Marvell Yukon 88E8056 Gigabit Ethernet controller (Onboard)

Is there anything you think I can do Short of Re installing Vista?

Thanks in Advance,
Sean.

Welcome!

Have you tried updating your network adapter drivers?

Are you trying to set a static IP on your computer?

Can you try another browser, just so we can eliminate that possibility?

Thanks,
~JK

Hello,

I had this happen to me awhile back, its quite frustrating so I know how you feel lol. Are you using a Motorola Surfboard Modem?

when the internet drops again do the follow:

in the command prompt type:
ping 66.102.7.106
- that is one of google's servers

if it goes thru but you cannot browse then immediately try pinging the router.
so to get the routers IP, in the command prompt type:
ipconfig

the default gateway is the router's ip probably going to be 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

then type ping <insert router ip address here>

if that goes thru then there is a problem with the browser or the laptop in which we can further investigate.

Yes, I've tried updating Drivers

Yes, Its across all Browsers

@ Crucial Well, the modem is a Motorola.
Yes, I can always ping anywebsite, and browse using an IP adress. I can ping the router, and the modem no problem.

Im pretty sure its not the browsers, seeing as all are affected.

@Static IP. I haven't tried that yet.

Anyhoo, right now, the internet on the troubled computer is working, But I think I'll give it a few minutes to see if it cuts out again.

You just answered your own problem bud. You said you can browse to IP address but not site names, ping the router and sites. This is telling me that somehow your DNS settings have been doofed. So, easy enough to check. In the command prompt do the following check:

type: nslookup > hit enter
type in google.com

if no IP address show perfect.

Go to the network and sharing center and click on manage network connections to change the device properties. At the dialog box scroll down and double-click on TCP/IPv4 and make sure that you obtain a DNS automatically.

If you do want to use static DNS servers let me know, I have a pretty big list of DNS servers.

**Edit** I just read your first post and seen that you have tried the above, sorry about that. But if the other machines in the house work then its not the router or the modem. So, is the adapter working correctly in the device manager?

Actually, I just got this figured out a few minutes ago. The problem was that the router was assigning a dns and IP that was being used by another computer, to my computer. SO the other computer could still browse, but the router was disallowing traffic from my computer.

So I tried using a Fixed IP AND DNS, and it worked perfectly.

Thanks for the help guys. =D

EDIIIIIIT
Huh, Guess I didn't fix it. It still seems to screw up, but I figured out that Changing the Fixed IP address will fix it for a short time.

It seems that my IP address isn't being renewed properly. Could it be a router problem?

Try setting a static IP on your computer. Go the the IP4 properties, and manually assign it an IP address.

I did that. Infact, its what I'm doing.

It happened again, so all I had to do was change the static IP address.

But I can't figure out why I had to. I just checked 3 of the 5 other computers, but they didn't have the same IP address as me, so it wasnt that.

Check your router settings, to make sure it is assigning IPs in the correct range.

Hows is your internet connection setup?

modem -> router -> computers?
modem -> router -> wireless router -> and computers?

Please make a diagram like the above.
If it is the first one then go into the routers config. If you have a CABLE internet connection and not DSL then make sure the routers internet connection is setup as DHCP and the network setting sshould have DHCP enabled serving a range from 192.168.x.100 thru 192.168.x.150

Also, please make sure that the router does NOT have a static assigned DNS server and it set to auto obtain one as well.

Then, go to your machine that has the problems and static assign it 192.168.x.105
the default gateway is the routers IP ( x is the address used by the router, could be 1 or 0 depends on your setup )

subnet mask is probably going to be 255.255.255.0
DNS servers I have supplied as well.

Make the above settings, if those do not work, try using that machine directly plugged into the modem.
