Vista Computers Both Slow To No Internet, Works in Safe Mode.. HELP!

Hello,

Firstly, this is my first post.. so please go easy on me. I found one similiar post here, but it was not specific to my situation.... so here goes... thanks for any help as we run a tax business and we are in cruch time here before the 15th and stuck with NO INTERNET!!!

After years of being fine on my Vista machines (we have 2 on the network, hard wired through a router usually.. however now they are connected directly to the modem) that have both either lost their internet connection or after many reboots of the modem, connect to a uselessly slow internet connection.

I've reset the router, and then gave up alltogether for the direct line to the modem. Comcast came today, couldn't figure it out.. they replaced the modem and claim the internet is fine from their end.

I did install Comcast's Norton Suite 3 weeks ago, which ran fine until now. I slow started having problems, Tivo Desktop couldn't transfer shows, then wifi connected devices like my iphone would ask over and over again for the password to the network. Then my VNC program stopped connecting to my home computer. Then, ultimately the internet connection was lost. All these things happened a few days after each other.

Comcast has told me I am on my own, they don't know what else to do. The kicker is that the internet is good and fast if I boot in SAFE MODE. I uninstalled Norton on one of my desktops, but still slow internet.

So, the tech tells me the problem is with Vista, says there must've been an update that went on both computers that is causing the problem. So I have no clue where to go to from there. I unistalled Norton on the one machine using Windows Uninstall to get rid of it. Is part of it there still?

It's so weird that both computers have the identical problem, yet its not the internet connection that is causing it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Compaq and a Dell, both running Vista .. 32bit on Dell and 64bit on the other.

I'd start updating drivers, etc but how can that be the cause when both computers have the same issue by different manufacturers at the same time??

Also, I have bought Windows 7 copies for both computers but haven't installed it yet. Should I upgrade now or fix the problem first? Would the upgrade solve the problem?

Any suggestions would be phenom.

Thanks
Rob

Yes! Still want your help! Go easy:-). Well, there's no real errors aside from page errors when the connection is so slow it can't load fully. Other than that, it either connects and is slow or won't connect a all despite many ip resets and modem resets.

I'll check out that article when I get home!

So, I disabled the items in msconfig an actually got it working on 1 computer. Can't pinpoint which one did it, I believe it was the Dell remote Access one though.

The other computer however, even with all the items disabled, still does not get a connection at all. Even in safe mode this one cannot connect to the network for even the slow connection I used to get.

So, where do I go from here? Good news is the one working is the tax computer!

the Compaq cannot seem to recognize the connection at all. I've reset the LAC and refreshed IP settings to no avail.

April 9 and counting.

I am really glad that I got the Tax computer going, at least. Try this. Type cmd in search (do not hit enter), right click and run as administrator.

In cmd type this: sfc /scannow. If errors are found run 3 times, it is lazy only fixes one problem at a time.

If that does not work, try in safe mode and see how the computer works.

, update. After resettig the modem again while tryig to get the Compaq (HP) running, the Internet started working fully on this one now... But if I unplug the Ethernet now and plug it into my Dell... It now won't connect. So there must be something specific with the connection? Shall I just try the router and connect the network again!?

My Computer

Thanks for the help. Comcast came back again and replaced my modem, again... and suddenly, I had internet on both computers. So then my router wouldn't setup, so after buying a new router the network setup and works fine.

What a pain, turns out... it was a failure of both the modem and the router at the same time.....odd coincidence.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
