Sorry, abhyankar, but we need some more info.

You're trying to connect your laptop, right? By wireless, or are you plugging an ethernet cable into it?

When you say that Ubuntu connects immediately, do you have both Windows and Ubuntu on the same laptop? I'm not familiar with Ubuntu; does it run concurrently with Windows?

Could you run VistaForums SysInfo Tool - Vista Forums (Select All, export the report, and upload it?

Hello Ed Canuck Thanks for replying

I have dual boot with hard drive partitioned for Linux and Windows

I must also mention that the internet on Windows works fine in the wireless network in the university !

But some reason which I am not able to figure out it does not in home. The owner of home has a router through which we get both wired and wireless network . This network works perfectly well on Linux but no clue why it is not working in Windows considering the fact that internet does also works on Windows when i am in other wireless network .

I have run the software you asked me run on windows and also when i start windows the system ask me install something and ask me to insert CD . i tried inserting all CD's I have but then it says it did not found it their !

I have attached with this reply the output of the software that you suggested to run and the image file which shows what system is asking when i log on to windows

Try downloading and installing this driver; it seems to be the most prevalent cause of the Base System device problem.

Drivers and Downloads

If you right-click on the Network Icon (the one showing two monitors on the bottom-right of the screen), and "Connect to a network", does the home network you're trying to connect to show up? If so, what happens when you try to connect to it?

Please follow carefully.

At the uni:

Go directly to this link at Dell Drivers and Downloads, do not use the Download Manager. Click on download, and run the file you downloaded.

Also run the MSInfo tool (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information, after it starts, click on File > Export, and save the report to a file. Upload it with your reply.

Before you do, back at home, check that your router has Broadcast enabled. Then reboot it. In Windows, go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Device Manager, then click on the + sign beside Network Adapters, right-click on your Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E, and click Uninstall.

Restart your computer, and see if you can connect.

Let us know what happens (take a screenshot of any errors and upload along with the MSInfo file).

I had the same problem. Vista is doing something that disables the network card completely. Notice how it doesn't even light up when you plug it in anymore?! This makes it look very much like you've burnt out your NAT card, but don't worry, you haven't.

I don't understand how Vista is doing it, but I did fix it by powering off my machine, unplugging it, and removing the battery from the motherboard. I rebooted into Linux as usual just like that! Also, you should know that I reproduced the incident exactly three times with the same result. I just can't install Vista without it shutting down my network card if it's on the same hard drive. Most likely it's some sort of authentication they have built into Vista making it look like you're getting two ip's on the same machine.

Makes ya angry, doesn't it?
