wireless netgear router ssid problems

Hi,
i am trying to setup a netgear wgt624 v2 wireless router to a cable modem to allow wireless internet connectivity. Simple enough until you factor vista into the mix it seems.
i know the ssid is broadcasting cos i can see and select the network from my xp laptop (and iphone) but on the vista laptop the ssid does not show up in the detectable list. if you go into connect to network/show networks.
however if you go into network and sharing cetre/wireless networks there it is at the top of the list !
I have restarted everything in the correct sequence and also updated the drivers online for the wireless device in the hp laptop. any ideas what to try next, as the device is not only visible and selectable but working in all other respects on other machines?
i confirm that the wlan is on in the vista laptop and it works on other wireless networks.
cheers
streekie
