My Computer

Hi guys/gals.

I've search these forums for similar problems and this one is the closest.

I'm having the same sort of problem connecting my Fujitsu-Siemens AMILO Li1818 laptop to my WinXP 2002 Pro SP3 desktop.

I had a new desktop computer 12 months ago and my ISP is BTinternet. Everything works ok on the desktop no problem. I bought the laptop of a friend at work because he was having trouble connecting to his router wirelessly. I said I would give it a try and if it works I would give him £50 for it. I installed my BT system disc and it connected up wirelessly straight off. I've never had a problem with the internet. Now I've heard of problems connecting when you install SP2, I installed it and mine still works.

Now a few months ago I tried to connect both computers up so I could share files rather that sticking them on a flash drive and copying them over. I got it working much to my supprise. I also connected my Epson C82 Stylus printer to the wireless network and thats ok. My desktop is a hard wired Ethernet connection.

I tried to connect the computers the other day and there was no connection. I checked all the settings and from what I can see those are ok. I did a system restore or a few weeks thinking it used to work now it doesn't but that didn't resolve anything.

I tried the first link Retirednow but because I'm already using WinXP SP3 that wouldn't install anything.

I tried the second link and the options to check with Run: cmd, ipconfig and ipconfig /all but that didn't tell me much. There is talk you can view a PDF made about this but you have to pay $49.95 for the this. I will post the details of ipconfig /all if you need them.

Sorry to rabbit on about my problem. Any suggestions will be greatfully received.

Cheers. ;)

Keith.

You may want to make an Ad hoc connection between the Computers in the Vista computer click on the Netwrok symbol in the System Tray and click on Connect to a Network

Then Manually Connact to a Network

Now select Ad Hoc connection (Computer-Computer connection)

Now eneter a Password This will be needed for the other Computer and Using the XP Machine connect to the Network

Hope This Helps,
Josh

Update:

I've just clicked on my Vista Network and opened it and my desktop is now listed. I can share the files back and forth directly again. There is a slight problem, I can't access certain folders of the desktop, Windows, Program Files, E Mail or Downloads, it brings up an Error code: ox80070005 Access denied. I've set the settings for all access read and write. Now I've been trying this for the past couple of weeks and its never worked. How come its started to work now I've replied to this thread?

Strange things computers.

I will be very interested if anyone has any suggestions on how to keep this connection or things to check or to access these blocked folders?

Cheers. ;)

Keith.

Thanks for the reply Josh.

I don't have a Network icon in the systray only my BTHomeHub2. I have the Network on my desktop but I don't see anywhere to add an Ad Hoc connection. ;)

You need to enter a user/password when doing the network with Vista... unless the 2 have the same person logged in.

Well, that fixed mine when I first switched to Vista.

I too have an issue with my vista seeing my 1 xp machine, my solution was to map the xp as a drive.

Thanks for the tip.

I don't use any user/password for either computer its only me using them so I'm an admin on both.

I tried mapping the XP as a Network drive. It did but I still can't access Windows, Program Files, E Mail or Downloads folders, it brings up an Error Z:\Downloads is not accessible, Access is denied. I can access all other folders just the same as before. ;)

Well there is nothing special about thoses folders apart from it being Windows and Program Files. The Downloads and E Mail are 2 folders that I made for my downloads and the E Mail doesn't contain any emails, its a folder I made many years ago and the name has stuck.

I've just notices that Windows, Program Files, Downloads and E Mail are all Read-Only. Everytime I click on each folder and remove the Read-Only in all sub folder it goes back to Read-Only again. ;)

Ok I've made new folders on the XP drive called E and D. I've copied all the files and sub folders over from E Mail and Downloads then check if I can access then of the laptop yes I can. I renamed them back to the original folder names now I can access them of the laptop. I haven't done Windows or Program Files because you can't while Windows is running. ;)
