strange behaviour from wireless adapter on desktop

Hi, thanks for taking the time too read my post..

I'm trying to use a Ralink wireless adapter to connect to a router (don't know the manufacturer yet, landlord isn't particularly helpful).

When I use vistas network and sharing centre it shows the signal at full strength, when I then click connect I am told that I cant connect due to a timeout or user action. After a cupple of minutes I will get a connection for around 30 seconds, then nothing for a cupple of mins. This cycle seems to continue endlessly.

I have spent a few hours browsing for solutions, trying many drivers along the way (none from microsoft yet as it all looks too confusing).

Is there a magic driver out there? Is a PCI going to make any difference? Do the same problems occur with Windows 7? Is it worth me banging on the landlords door to find out brand of the router?

Any help is greatly appreciated, cheers, Joey.
