Greetings all, I am in the process of creating a webpage, first time doing it, I am using notepad/wordpad, now, everything is going along fine except for one little issue, I cannot save my document as html, only rich text and plain text are the only option. What could be the issue here ? And what are my alternatives ? Using Vista 32, thank you for taking your time reading this

My Computer

Try this: Right click and save as administrator on notepad
then save the html document
If it works make a desktop shortcut to notepad.
right click>properrties, go to advanced and choose run as administrator.

This should work

thank you for your respnse, but i am having some difficulties in finding out how you can actually run notepad as administrator or how you save as administrator

My Computer

Go to search and type notepad. When it jumps up, right click on it and run as administrator. Everything that you do after that is as administrator.

Hi Monkeyfeet,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

You can use Notepad or Wordpad to save the .html files; however, you need to save them as a filetype of .txt and include .html in the filename which you normally don't do or need to do (as in typing the name as Hello.html). These programs do not have the option to save directly as an .html filetype. You do not need to be an Administrator or run the programs as an Administrator to do this - it will work fine opened normally as a standard user. Here's the procedure in more detail: Creating Web Pages With WordPad.

I just did it myself in Wordpad and it worked perfectly and the file opened in Internet Explorer just as I had created it. Since it is named .html, to open it in Notepad or Wordpad, you will need to right click on the file and click Open With and choose Notepad or Wordpad (or scroll to find the program file and open it that way if the options don't show) - or you could rename the file to a .txt extension instead of the .html extension and then either Notepad or Wordpad would open it (whichever is the default) or you could rename it and again use Open With and chances are good those options would be presented and you wouldn't need to search for them if .html doesn't bring them up automatically.

Actually, there are better and free options available to create HTML web pages (and will save them as HTML filetypes instead of the above workaround). Here are two that you might want to try:

Free HTML Editor | CoffeeCup Software

Nvu Web Authoring Software.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I think that with the above information, you should be able to solve your problem.

If you happen to have Word, saving as html would be easy. If not, check Open Office.

If you happen to have Word, saving as html would be easy. If not, check Open Office.

The same would be true if you dowloaded and installed the free OpenOffice Suite (www.openoffice.org) and used the Write program which would also save the file as an html filetype (and wouldn't cost you a dime). But it probably isn't as good for what you are doing as the previously recommended free programs which are designed for creating websites (but OpenOffice is definitely better than either Notepad or Wordpad).

You have many options. As they are free (except for Word), you can try each at your leisure and see which works best for you - or you can stay with Notepad and Wordpad now that you know the workaround to make them into .html files.

Good luck!

If you do not have Word, Open Office would be a great choice. Not only for this situation but also for general use. It has most of the programs associated with Microsoft Word, and its free. You may want to give it some thought.

Richard is, of course, very correct. I was focusing on your problem when I recommended OpenOffice, but it has much more to offer than just that. It includes very good alternatives to Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint (some of the products from Microsoft Office).

I know some people who have Microsoft Office but choose to use OpenOffice instead (where there are equivalent programs) because they prefer it. I personally prefer Microsoft Office, but consider OpenOffice an excellent program suite - especially given that it is free - and it would be my choice if I didn't already have Office and/or couldn't afford to buy it (since it is rather expensive - especially the versions which include more programs).

If you don't have Microsoft Office, give it a try. It's free, so you have nothing to lose. If you don't like it (and I guarantee you will prefer it over Wordpad), you can always simply uninstall it whenever you choose and go back to the way you were doing things before.

Well that confirms that open office is a good choice
Give it a try.
The best part is that it is free.
Dont let the preferences of others influence your decision. Try the free first, then go with the pay. Once paid for the money is gone. I know if I have the choice again, I would go with Open Office.
