Sky wireless keeps disconnecting

Hey, I searched for a solution on the forums but couldn't find anything that worked

So I have an acer aspire with windows vista home premium, sky wireless broadband and a netgear N wireless adapter.

Lately my internet keeps disconnecting and i have to reset the modem and take out and reinsert the adapter to get it back, the other computer which is attached by wire works just fine even when i'm disconnected. It usually stays stable with low connection for a while but would randomly disconnect every now and then, very frustrating!

So far i've updated the drivers which had little to no effect and then i tried reinstalling it with the disc, also no effect. Calling Netgear is useless since my warranty is over and they put me on to some guy who trys to get £60 off me. It used to work just fine from the same location but then the computer downstairs got moved and it's been getting worse since even though i don't see how that's connected and the pc is now back where it was.

Anyway i'm pretty sure the issue is with the adapter, any advice on what i can do to fix this? could to be related to a windows update maybe?

Hi Zelaos,
Welcome to the forum. I hope we can manage to resolve your problem.

First I would ask you IS ALL your security software and drivers upto date?

What software do you have?

I would ask you to check out the Thread in this section -Very Recent 10 minutes ago entitled

'broadband signal drops out' This may help a little.

Also check out this website for your info .Wireless network adsl broadband routers for business and home networking

Then please come back to me with any questions.

Well i think my security is entirely down, haven't paid it in a while, although it still tells me not to go on certain websites, after reinstalling i guess i need to put in the new drivers again but it had no effect last time and i think the disc did that for me anyway..hmm..

We have a cordless phone, could that be causing the problem? it seems to happen whenever i move my pc so i thought it was a range issue but why now when it's been fine for ages. Is it possible that the adapter would, how can i put it.. have less range over time? i have had it for a long time with no issues

Hi, Please in the absence of any security would you please first, if you can download from this site.

anti-Malwarebites , make sure it is up to date run full scan, and let us have the result.
I feel we need to get something in there first that's on our side, before we tackle the rest.

The lack of security could be a contributory factor to your problem, OK?
Do you agree?

Then we can proceed onwards and hopefully resolve the problem.

Links to other sites will follow for free downloads, as malwaarebites is.

You will need more than MalwareBytes, that will look for malicious software but you need an anti-virus program. Microsoft Security Essentials is free and rated very highly.
Are you able to put an aerial on your adapter, some have a socket to allow this.
Do you have other electrical things running next to your computer?

I'll have a look into security essentials after the scan, i'm not sure how i would tell if there's room for an ariel and no there's nothing else but my pc here, thanks

scans done, completely clear, just need to reset pc for microsoft security now, i'm pretty much convinced it's to do with range, i literally moved it 3 inches and it hasn't had bad connection since, i'm on the 3rd floor of my house and the modem is on the ground floor so it makes sense i guess, anything else i could get to maximise range that's affordable?

Scan finished, it's completely clear, i'm convinced it's the range that's the issue now, i literally moved it 3 inches and it's been fine for a while now, it's in an awkward spot though and i'd much rather increase the range, any way aside from an ariel i could go about this?

Zelaos,

It does indicate that way. On what you've told us.

I can only think of a small number of options myself.

That checking the manufacturers website to see if with ariel it would be enough to increase range.
Is there a booster available for that model that would increase range sufficiently?

You are, in a way, getting good range now on the third floor, however that does not solve your immediate problem.

I'm afraid personally i'm out of fresh ideas.
On the other hand members of the forum, more experienced than I may be able to come up with other
solutions!!

Also, you must keep up with the free security checks and regular scans to help keep your computer clear from virus.
