Wireless Network Crashes Internet When Transferring Across Network

I've just about given up on this but maybe someone can help.

I have Windows 7, my wife's computer has Windows Vista

There are also other computers on the network in the backroom using 7 and XP I believe but they are not involved in this problem directly.

My wife uses the Linksys version 2 USB Wireless Adapter. My HP is a wireless adapter that is built in and I can't check from here but I believe the problem is being caused by her computer(or some kind of incompatibility between hers and the router which is a Linksys wrt54g)

Anyways, the problem occurs when trying to transfer files between the two computers(normally mine to hers). It's fairly slow at only 1 meg per minute as displayed by the dialog box and it crashes the internet completely. As soon as we transfer anything it seems to just kill the network. We can both download and surf from the internet but computer to computer it just seems to die. Now I believe I've transfered to other computers(when my mom was visiting with her laptop) without issue but with my wife's vista computer, it just dies.

Any clues as to why this might happen
