Limit inbound internet download speed

Hi there,

As this is my first post, I'll go through a quick presentation. My name is Patrick, 26, living in Switzerland.

I'm looking for a few help to solve an... unusual question : I'm quite sure there is tons of topics on "how to increase my download speed", my wish is to "decrease it" :D

Well, the reason is simple : I do have several machines on my private network. And when I do download files on my main machine from servers which are really fast (for example Megaupload or similar), I do saturate my 10Mb connection with 1.25 MB/s, which means other machines has strictly nothing left. In fact, they even cannot print a Google page.

I found some documentation on "Advanced QoS options" at Paramètres de QoS avancés (in french, sorry, there should be a translation), which seems to be dedicated to Windows Server versions. I tried to use the same on Windows Vista (the options exists and can be changed), but this had no effect at all on my download speed in Firefox.

I set the value to the least (0 = 64Kb / sec) but was still downloading at 1.2 MB/sec. I tried to reboot the machine, in case this option would take effect only after it, but this option really seems to have no effect at all.

Is it something that indeed works only on the server edition of windows ?
Is there another way on windows to limit the inbound internet connection ?
Would you recommend any free software which can make something similar ?

Thank you in advance, any help will be fairly appreciated.

Hello, Your best bet is to QOS at your router.

What router do you have? Depending ion the router, if supported i'd recommend using dd-wrt firmware on it.

So post up your router, and we'll go from there.

Thank you for the answer.

I did look this way, and found out that most of the routers do not support QoS. Only professional routers do support it. I went to the nearest computer shop and asked for this, they told me "well... we have what you are searching for, but all the models are almost more than 500.-" (you can consider that 1 swiss franc equal 1 us dollar, it's almost the same).

For example :

Zyxel ZyWALL USG 50 do have the QoS, but 499.-
Zyxel ZyWALL USG 20W or Zyxel ZyWALL USG 20 do not have it, 229 and 299.-

It's... well... quite expensive. If I do find anything within a hundred or a hundred and a half, I would clearly take it...

Today, I do not have any router, only a switch. All machines have a public address, no DHCP involved (other than the one from the internet provider modem).

Yha okay, as you saw, good routers with qos are pricey... Thats where dd-wrt firmware comes in. Its a proffesional grade router os for free.

You can put it in almost ANY router, and get a fantastic cheap router/network solution.,

I run it on a linksys wrt54gl router, thats only 69.90. Steg Computer & Electronics - Online Shop

However, the current best router theyve mentioned on the dd-wrt forum, is the Asus rt-n16.

Seriously look into dd-wrt router firmware...

On a note, i'm not that great in networking.

Hi and thanks for the tip. Your solution sounds really great ;) I'm quite surprised such an evident configuration option is not available natively on Windows... Anyway, your help is really much appreciated.

Hi once more,

I finally found some easier and cheaper way to limit the internet inbound download speed. I place it here if someone do arrive here with the same requirements :

Just have a look at NetLimiter - The Ultimate Bandwidth Shaper

The 3.0 pro version is around 30 dollars, and there should be a free version with the 2.0. I'm currently testing the pro version 3.0 for the 28 free days, and it's really easy-to-use. I'm evaluating the stability of this software, but currently did not had any crash, disconnect, ... of any kind

Hope this answer will help ;)

Nice, with you only needing to control 1 system, that looks to be a great way.
