Viewing devices on my wifi network

I recently decided it would be cool to be able to see a list of all the devices that are connected to my wireless internet. Problem is, I cannot for the life of me figure out how. I've read that most routers/modems have a way of showing you this, but a) my modem is really old and I don't know if it supports this, and b) I think the modem has a way to attach a special router to it, but I have a completely separate router connected to it. So while wifi works fine, all the wireless setting on the modem are greyed out because it doesn't think I have any routers attached to it. So maybe there's a way to view it under those settings, and I can't because it's all greyed out. My modem is an Actiontec M1000, and I'm not really sure what the router is. If someone can tell me how to see devices (AND THEIR NAMES, not just IP/MAC addresses) from that router, that'd be great.

But what I'm really looking for is a program I can run on my computer to show me all the devices. I've tried net view in cmd, but that only gives me computers on the network, and not devices like iPhones or iPod Touches.

I know McAfee Security Center has a Network View or something that does a pretty good job of at least showing all the IP addresses, but a) I'm trying out some different free AV/Firewalls (since McAfee is too resource-heavy) and that's not at my disposal at the moment, b) it only shows IP address, not device names (very important to me), and c) I really want a standalone program to do this with.

Any help would be great. Programs for Vista or 7 are what I need, not XP. I say that because I did find one that might potentially work called SuperScan4, but it only works on XP. Thanks!

Edit: I found Wireless Network Watcher - Show who is connected to your wireless network and it's almost what I'm looking for. Simple, small, no hassle. But it still doesn't show the device names of things like my iPod.

I'm fairly certain that it should be possible to see its name because a while back, my school sent out warnings to everyone that was connecting to their wifi saying that we had to stop because almost all the students were using it and it couldn't handle all that traffic. (A little while later they got smart and put a password on it) But I asked one of the people in charge how they knew who was on it, and they told me that most of the devices (including my iPod) had a device name that somehow identified the owner (In my case my iPod's device name was my full name so that was pretty obvious). So I'm sure there's got to be a way that I can see that info on my home network as well.

Hi Adam,

Well I've had a little look around on Google but nothing seems to come up that's better than Wireless Network Watcher.

Have you tried Wireshark? I don't know if it does device names, but it monitors WLAN traffic:

Wireshark · Go deep.

Might be worth a shot. I think you need a wireless card that is able to go into Monitor Mode though.

Have you tried asking at school? Might be worth a shot :)

So if it can show names, do you know where'd I'd go to see them? Haha it looks pretty complicated, especially for someone who knows very little about the magic workings of wifi and packets and such.

My school is a little touchy about these kinds of things, and I don't think they'd appreciate questions like that. They're likely to think I'm planning a hack on it or something. They're pretty paranoid. I'd just rather not bring it up. (I got that other information about device names right before they went crazy and locked everything down)

Um, why not just log olnto the router read the connected/dhcp list?

Using wireshark on not yoiur network is sometimes illegal, and schools have expelled people over this.

I tried, but can't find that list anywhere! Well, at least not on my modem. My router is separate. How do I log into my router instead?

No no no, I'm NOT trying to do any of this at my school. Just on my own home network. I just brought up my school because I know they have a system of looking that stuff up, and that's where I got the idea from.
I kind of like not being in prison, so I would never use this on someone else's network :)

Open the Run box and copy and paste the following into it:

cmd /c ipconfig /all | findstr "Default Gateway" > %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\tom982.txt

Then press enter. On your desktop, you'll find a file called tom982.txt, open it. Inside, there should be an IP address, copy and paste this into the URL bar of your browser and go to it :) This should be you're router settings page

[del]...HOLY CRAP! Haha you have to tell me how that command works![/del]
Nvm haha thought that was somehow pulling a file off your computer into mine :)

Ok when I type that in it asks me for username and password. I don't think a password has ever been set on either my modem or router, anyone know what the default might be? I tried everything Here under Linksys (they're all various combinations of admin), but nothing works. The prompt (in Firefox) says:

A username and password are being requested by http://192.168.1.1. The site says "WRT54GC"

And then it gives me 2 boxes for username and password. Should I hold the reset button on my router for 30 seconds to reset it, or is there some secret password and username I'm missing? Like I said, I'm pretty sure no custom credentials have ever been set.

Lol, all it does is do an ipconfig /all command then filter out every line that doesn't have Default Gateway in it :) Hmm, try looking in the router manuals and all of the other stuff that came with it. If that still fails, then go for a reset :)

Ok did the reset and got in fine. Maybe it did get changed at some point. Strangely, even in my router it doesn't show a device name for anything other than my computers.

As a side note, does anyone have any experience/opinions about changing the firmware from the default whatever-it-is-now to something like Tomato? I've heard that it's supposed to be better, and offer a lot more control and options than the whatever firmware is on there by default, but don't know for sure.

I've done dd-wrt on my old wrt54gL which is the *nix version of the wrt54g.

It was quite simple following the instructions. Just ensure you do it right else you got a brick.
