Switch an external drive

Hi,
I have a Western Digital My Book 1TB drive connected to a router so that it can be shared by a Desktop and a Laptop on a local network for backup purposes.
I have chosen this drive to capture some VHS movies because it has a lot of free space.
I want to view these movies on my television using Verizon Media Manager. This works OK when the movies are on the C: drive but Media Manager does not "see" the network drive.
Would it be possible to connect the WD drive via a Y connection directly to the computer to use Media Manager and to the router for backup?
I would like this to be seamless so that I would not have to redefine the drive to the computer or the router each time the switch was made.

Thanks
Frank C

Hi,

I am not sure as to what the problem is but if you connect the WD device to a "switch" by wire & the switch to the router, again by wire, you have a Y connection to the PC, again by wire.

To assist you further I would need to understand the exact network set-up of your systems. AV & Firewall in use. If you are using static IP's or if DHCP is active (Router IP assigning) etc.etc.... OK?

AAV & Firewall in use:
I am using AVG Firewall and Anti Virus I am also using Spybot Search and Destroy with Tea Timer active.

Network Connection details shows--
Property: DCHP Enabled, Property: Yes

Both IPV6 and IPV4 have obtain address automatically and obtain DSN Server address automatically selected. The local network has the two computers, a printer and the WD external drive. The attached screen shot shows the Local Network settings.

Thanks for the response Lottie,
I can't get either computer to produce the full map. In both cases the message is:
"Windows cannot create the network map. Responses from other devices on the network are delayed or there is an incompatible router on the network."
I went through all of the suggestions and I can not find a problem.
The Windows Network Diagnostics did not find a problem with the internet connection. It didn't say anything about the home network.
Both computers do share the printer and the external drive successfully.
The router is supplied by Verizon as part of their FIOS service that includes telephone, television and computer network. the router is ActionTec M1424WR

Frank C

I believe He wants to speed up the connection while streaminfg, yet keep the NAS ability of the external on router.

I don't think you can Y a usb like that.

Thanks to all,
I did create a short cut to map a network drive. The mapping worked but Verizon Media manager does not "see" this drive. I think that I will just copy the videos that I want to see with Media Manager to the C: disk and leave the external drive on the network.
I don't want to spend any more time on this now. I do appreciate the help and I learned about mapping
Thanks
Frank C
