netbios problems

Took a malware hit and removed it but after getting MS updates I lost networking all together. Fixed everything but peer to peer MS networking.

unable to browse my microsoft workgroup. Can ping others stations and others can ping mine.

tried to start netbios helper service and got this
windows could not start TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper error 1075
The only dependency seems to be "Ancilliary Function Driver for windows"
Don't seem to have problems starting any other services.

then tried to reset the IP stack and winsock.
C:\Windows\system32>netsh int ip reset c:\reset.txt
Reseting Echo Request, failed.
Access is denied.
Reseting Global, OK!
Reseting Interface, OK!
A reboot is required to complete this action.

In order to perform this you probably need to run command line with admin permissions. Browse to command prompt, right click, and select run as administrator. Confirm or provide an admin password and then execute your commands. While you are at it run the command sfc /scannow; I would try this first.

netsh was run as admin user. Wish it was that easy.

Permissions, both file and registry I believe, were modified when I got hit, just don't know which ones I missed that cause this error.

Can you access the built in administrator account? It doesn't have as many restrictions.

There is no Administrator login in Vista, I can "run as" though.
SFC ran 4 times and the last couple times it came up with nothing.

Still I can not map drives or add networked shared printers.

Error 1075 still comes up every time I try and start TCP/IP NetBios Helper.
Have removed/re-installed file and printer sharing as well as NWLink services and protocols.

Thinking a registry entry was scrambled.

My Computer

I found the registry for NETBT elsewhere and after importing it I can browse MS workgroups.

I broke it into three files for the three control set entries it encompassed. I believe that CurrentControlSet is the only one needed.

I will try and attach it here.

Thanks All

Jumped thr gun, after restarting I'm back to where I was...no peer to peer. I'm lost now=}

Since I have not seen a response I am going to post this problem differently.

ComputerJoe,
I have deleted your two other threads. Duplicate posts are not allowed. In addition they will do you more harm than good. You will not get additional help by double posting and in addition posters will not know what information you have already been given and this may cause confusion and a delayed solution.
I do wish you luck with your problem.

If ipaddress works but the name doesn't then that's a dns issue which is a setting that is probably in the router. For dns to work something needs to keep track of the device name and it's associated ipaddress. As for that service have you tried SFC as suggested?

Hi, try running the sfc program, maybe it can fix those for you . http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html Some have said to run this 4 or 5 times to ensure it did all it can , as running it just once may not repair all files .

I have run SFC /scannow until blue in the face. Not the router because when a friend brought his WIn7 PC in he could see all the other PC's on my network and since this machine worked fine until the malware/windows update was done and noone touched the router.

Again, it has to do with the TCP/IP netbios Helper service not starting. I have been around the net everywhere and nobody seems to have an answer to this one. Not a Netbt or netbios registry setting suggestion or anything. I was getting desparate but since now I'm printing I've bought myself a little time but I can not just
forget it! I'm going to educate myself about this if it kills me.

Thanks again

Yes, I've run SFC /scannow a zillion times.
The problem cannot be my network router as my two XP machines see each other just fine and a friend's Vista machine can see the XP machines as well. My router was not touched.

DNS service on my machine is started and generates no errors. I am convinced it's the TCP/IP Helper service that will not start, I can't determine the crux of the problem other than a error 1075 it gives. The only dependency listed is Windows Ancilliary Function Driver. When I look in Device Manager-Hidden Devices this AFD device is listed under non-plug and play devices with no errors so I hoping for some new ideas. I'm looking at registry entries for AFD, Netbt Netbios, LanManager Server and Workstation.

I've edited the LMHOSTA.SAM file to link the computer name to the stations IP address. Have since removed it when it didn't work.
I did look at Hosts and found only the following line was NOT commented out:
\machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\parameters\nullsessionshares
