Connected to router but no Internet connection

Hello, I am a first timer on any forum but am lost at what to do to fix my problem. I am using my iPhone to access the net to try and find solutions.

A couple of days ago my laptop was connecting to the net fine then later in the day we tried again and couldn't access the net. It has a strong router connection at home and also at another family members but no Internet access.

I've spent a very long time with my ISP twice with no success. Ive googled and tried things for hours. Its running Vista Home Basic. Say local connection only, started saying the router is unidentified, tried the ipconfig thing in cmd, it wont ping, media disconnected errors show and the error on the web page is 105 unable to resolve the servers DNS address.

Please let me know what else I need to let you know to try and fix this. Thank you

Hello, open up Control Panel , then open up Network Sharing Center, then on the left of that screen , press the Diagnose and repair . Post back how that works out please.

Hi YD. When I ran Windows Network Diagnostics I got a message that said "Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response."

Than it said; "Reset the network adapter "Wireless Network Connection 2". I than tried to connect to another website and once again I got another message that said; "Server Not Found".

Have either of you reset in the proper manner?

Turn off computer, unplug power cable from the router and/or modem.

Then plug in the modem, wait till it's fully up, then plug in the router, let fully boot. Then boot up computer.
*If you have a modem/router obviously they go on together*

What brand and mode is your modem and router?

Sorry I've not responded till now. I'm still at times not able to connect to the internet. Now as to all of the suggestions that you guys have given me, Patonb's and Yard Dog, still having connection problems. In fact while I am typing this reply, I had to wait because Firefox lost the internet connection for a minute. And when I than try to connect to I.E. I get this message; " Internet Explorer cannot display webpage". I hit the suggested message displayed "Diagnose Connection Problem" I get another message that says "Windows found a problem that cannot be repaired automatically connect internet provider". BTW I wanted to tell you I'm using a Cisco Valet Connector trying to connect to our Cisco 1000 Wireless Adapter. It use to work but than last week it started having issues that we have already addressed.

I'm ready to go and buy Windows 7 and get rid of Vista. I hate the expense but I'm at my wits-end. :(

A very basic step which gets overlooked is for the user to confirm they do not have malware/virus issues, the best way for this to be done is for user to run updated full scans of their anti virus program and if they do not already use Malwarebytes AntiMalware, then ask them to download the Free program , update it and run full scan. Get it here if you do not have it already . Post results of this please. Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

Ah, so youre wireless... Shoulda asked before.

Okay, you need to try plugging the computer straight into your internet modem.

We need to figure out what part is the problem, so if we start straight in to your modem, then then router then wireless we can see if anything is faulty.

Can you linjk to the cisco 1000 Wireless Adapter? I'm unsure of what it is.

The internet modem is two rooms away. That is why we use a Cisco 1000 wireless modem. The Cisco Valet Connector was purchased 6 months ago when we moved and the wireless router is too far away to use an ether cord, I hope I spelled that right. I have ran Malwarebytes and it always shows that there is no viruses, etc.

The PC just started running slow and than the connection problems started. I've done all the suggestions that Yard Dog said to try with this thread and still no help.

I looked at the Device Manager and it shows that the USB Mass Storage Device had a yellow triangle and I double clicked on it and said "It cannot start. (code 10)". I clicked on the Details Tab than the Driver Details Tab and it says c:\Windows\system 32\drivers\USBSTOR.SYS.
Could this be the problem and if it is how to I fix it?

Mass storage yada yada is a usb flash drive or phone.

You need to go plug your computer directly into the router to see if your computers bunk. The conect to the router wirelessly. then to your extender.

Right now you have 3 links and any or all could be the issue.

That may not be the problem you are having, but, to solve that problem , you would select your computer if you have downloaded that driver, if not, then select it to search the internet.
Is there any way you can move the computer to a location to hardwire the connection for trouble shooting ?
