Vista: only web access, no ftp, no other protocols.

Hi!

I'm a new user here, and i'm at my wit's end. Sorry, if this topic has already been covered.

I have an HP Pavilion notebook with Vista Home Premium 32bit. Since the first day, only Internet Explorer and Windows Mail can access the internet. Fortunately, i have a very good little proxy program, called Proxomitron. Through this, a good few more program can connect to the net, but web only. No ftp, no nothing else. And for many years (with previous Windowses) i was using ftp and other services a lot. For years i didn't need ftp, but now i do again. Unable to connect, that's the answer i get now. I bought this laptop years ago, and i thought, thats a bug in Vista. This theory was even confirmed, when an experienced computer expert said, it was so. But i've been surfing the web, and read, that a lot of people get along with Vista. Unfortunately i don't know anyone in my neighbourhood to have Vista and ask for help, and since i can't connect to irc, i thought i would ask for help here. Any help much appreciated!

My internet connection is wireless, but the antenna is connected via utp to my Realtek nic.

P.S: I tried my best to fix the problem, but i gave up over a year ago, so i don't remember what i tried.

Thanks!

One more thing! The laptop came with Norton Antivirus, integrated in the Os. I disabled it after some tinkering, but i didn't uninstall it.
Currently i use Windows Firewall and Avira Free Antivirus.

If you go to the Internet Options, Advanced, in IE, is the box to enable third party browser extensions checked.

What happens when you try to access the internet via something like Firefox.

I have always found that Norton anti-virus interferes the least with Windows operations.

Thanks for your response. I looked at it, and the box is check, has been all the time. I tried Firefox to load a page without the proxy and failed.
By the way: i also can't ping my own ip's (the lan and the internet ip), however i can ping localhost and internet servers.
Norton Antivirus came embedded in Windows, but i disabled it, because i didn't want to pay for it. I didn't uninstall it, i tried that earlier, on a friend's laptop, and it didn't work it out quite well, to say the least.

I forget what it's called, but there's an official uninstaller for Norton at the Symantec website. However, I've never had a problem uninstalling it from Control Panel.

I don't know a whole lot about all these proxy, IP, FTP, etc. settings. If you go to Control Panel, Network and Sharing, you can run the diagnose and repair option. If that doesn't detect a problem, you can go to Manage Network Connections, select your Local Area Connection and run Diagnose on that. You would do that for the computer that has the router hard connected to it.

But my hard drive is almost full, and i just won't risk a Norton uninstall. As soon as i back everything up, i will do everything, you said. Like i said, that failed uninstall happened many years ago.

I don't know what "nearly full" means but, if it's only got a few Gb of free space left, that can cause many problems.

Have you ever run the Windows Disk Cleanup tool from Accessories and rebooted? It would be interesting to see how much free disk space it clears up.

My comment about Norton was just an aside.

Did you look at the Network diagnostics. Like I said, I'm pretty ignorant about all this stuff like, I don't know what ping means in regards to the ip, etc.

I've been having these problems since the beginning (on a fresh install). Of course that flipping Norton was embedded in the os, i blame everything on it. What kind of "person with questionable purposes" would embed a commercial av in a laptop os, where i have to pay for it after the initial months??
I will take a look at network diag as soon as i back up everything.
