network connect, but no internet connection

my pc shows to be connected to the network but not connecting to the internet. This computer is about 3-4 years old, running vista home premium 64 bit. I am absolutely clueless what to do. All advise is appreciated.

I should add I'm trying to connect via wi-fi. I have other computers and devices working just fine.

Thanks, Christine

Hi Christine.

Has it been connecting to Wi-Fi before in the past?

I had the same problem. I went to network and sharing, right clicked on the local area network icon, selected properties and unchecked the comodo firewall driver.

Hi.
I too have similar problem. My Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop (Vista Home Premium, 32 bit) connected fine to the internet until today. I have a wireless connection to a BT (British Telecom) branded router (no other manufacturer's information on it) which I've had for about three years, with no previous problems. A second laptop (running Windows 7) in the house also connects fine - and still does today. But since this afternoon the Dell says it is connected to my BTHomeHub, but Local Access only. I get the same result if I connect with an ethernet cable.

I've tried rebooting the laptop and the router. If I start the laptop in safe mode it will connect to the internet.

I've run a McAfee scan to check for viruses etc., with nothing found.

I've updated the wireless LAN driver (though I don't see that can be the problem anyway, as I get the same problem over the ethernet cable).

Any ideas please?

John

The problem with network errors are that there are so many different reasons for not being able to connect.

1st. Windows8 suggested running a virus/malware scan. Make sure that you do this, obviously you can't download the software on the computer from the internet directly, so you need to download the software on another computer, save it to a flash drive and install it on the computer with the connectivity issues.

2nd. Check the Device Manager. Right click on "Computer" and select "Manage". Then on the left panel of the window hit "Device Manager". Are there any devices showing yellow caution signs or red symbols?

3rd. Have you tried plugging the computer directly into the router/modem with the use of an ethernet cord?

4th. What kind of adapter are you using for Wifi?

Thanks thetroubleshoot. Tell me about it! I've tried many.
1. I've run a McAfee scan to check for viruses etc., with nothing found.
2. There are two items, both called "Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface showing under netword adapters, both with yellow warning triangles. What are they? Could I safely delete them? And under Other Devices, there are two Unknown Device both with yellow warning triangles. Remove?
3. Yes - no change, still Local Access only
4. The adapter is integral to the laptop - a Dell wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-card.

Thanks for any help.

2 things...

1. If you have Local Access to the router you are actually connecting to the router, just not the internet. Have you pressed the hidden reset button on the router? And also how long have you had the router?

2. Don't delete anything in the Device Manager...

Just some side notes:

- Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface is used for IPV6, which you shouldn't have to worry about.
- The Unknown Devices make me rather curious.. we'll have to see if it's really the router before we proceed there.
- McAfee is good, but a computer in diagnostics still needs other tools like MalwareBytes, etc. No single scanner will detect every known virus and handle them effectively as another software.
- Also the Ethernet Adapter for your laptop is in a state of "Media Disconnected", so it's been disabled, which is the reason why Ethernet is not working. Also within the original image the reason the Tunneling is disabled is because it is also disconnected.

Hi,
1. Yes. Router powered off for about 2 minutes. After re-powering that, reset button pressed for >10 seconds. No change - still Local Access only
2.Is there any clue in:
a - connecting with ethernet cable rather than wifi makes no difference - wtill Local Access only
b - Connecting in "Safe Mode with networking" means I do get an internet connection, using wifi

If you're getting an internet connection in safe mode, then I would believe that there is some program preventing you from accessing the internet...

Try this: You have McAfee right? There was recently a bad update released that disabled internet access for some of it's users. Can you open the main McAfee console (in Taskbar) click "About" and tell me what the DAT version is?

Report back with the DAT version, and then we can go from there :)

Hi the troubleshoot,
Before you spend too much more time on this - I tried once again rebooting is safe mode, and it found the internet OK, as it did earlier today. I then rebooted in normal mode, and now it has found the internet in safe mode too! I did nothing else to change anything. I hate intermitten faults. I'd almost rather it stayed broken, as I now have no faith when it might fall over again. So if you do have any clever ideas, please pass them on, but otherwise, many thanks for your suggetsions. I hope I don't need to bother you again.

Still check the McAfee DAT version, this is a mass user issue... If you're internet hasn't reacted this way before, something changed. No bother, hope you report back :)

It really looks like you spotted it. Well done. Now I have an internet connection my McAfee told me there is a problem with updating my software. Then I received your message.

I am having to uninstall and reinstall McAfee, because although I now have an internet connection, their site to allow me to download their McAfee Virtual Technician is unavailable.

I am now trying to download the McAfee software to reinstall it, and I keep getting a page unavailable message. I assume so may people are having to go theough this it's just crashing their site. What abysmal service. I'm going to give up on McAfee and switch to AVG. I'll certainly never recommend McAfee to anyone ever again.

I realise McAfee are nothing to do with you, and really appreciate your help. If you'd like me to confirm success with AVG tomorrow, please just reply to me. I'm giving up now - it's getting late here in the UK.

Best regards

John

No problem, glad I could help! :) Definitely report back, I want to make sure everything ends up working OK for you.

I ended up having three computers of my own with disabled updates and had to perform the repair a few days ago. It didn't cause the internet to go out luckily.

Also feel free to give me some Rep (icon in the middle of the three on top left of my posts.) :)

Thanks!
Nick

Holy cow! I was just about to make a lengthy post with all the stuff I've tried to diagnose/troubleshoot the same problem. I have the same DAT version of McAfee too. Off to the McAfee site.

^The only problem with that solution is that your WiFi drivers will not stop working just because there's an update. It's McAfee, I'm 99.9% positive. Also someone can't download updates if their internet is out. :)

However doing Jorge's suggestion after you get your internet and McAfee back is a good idea. Don't use your computer for leisure without making sure you have anti-virus software installed and active.
