Printer and file sharing

I am trying to put my computer with Vista on a home network. When I try to turn on file sharing , public folder sharing or printer sharing and click apply I get a box [specified service does no exist as in installed service] My instructions also said Network discovery would be turned on when I selected the Private location but it is still turned off and I get the same box message when I try to turn it on. I have had this computer on this network befor with a Windows 7 computer and have printed to the printer. Now all of a sudden it doesn't work. Thanks, Bruce

System specs printer specs for all machines on the network and all printers. Otherwise it's mind reading.

Hi Bruce,

We can try few steps to check if services are enabled, follow the below mentioned steps:

Step 1:
Go to Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Connections.
Click View Status of the Local Area Connection.

Step 2:
Click Properties.

Step 3:
Make sure that following services, protocols are enabled and set up properly.

Note: Default configuration is recommended.

• Minimum Components:
1. Client for Microsoft Networks.
2. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.
3. Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).

• Recommended Services, if supported:
1. QoS Packet Scheduler.
2. Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
• Vista Components:

1. Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver.
2. Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder.

Step 4:
After configuring the Local Connection Properties, proceed by:
• Enable File Sharing.
• Proceed to the Windows Firewall.

Step 5:
Click Change Settings.

Step 6:
A. Make sure that the Firewall is “Enabled” and Don't Allow Exceptions is “Disabled” unless the computer is located within an unsecured network.
B. Click on the Exceptions Tab when finished.

Step 7:
Enable File and Printer Sharing on the Exception List.

If issue persists, run SFC scannow and check if it fixes any corruption, use the following link for detailed instructions:

Please revert back for clarification.

Madhur B, Thank you for your response.. All of the componets and services in step are enabled. I do not use windows fire wall I have McAffee..I had already gone microsoft site and got instructions for connecting a Vista and Windows 7 computer and they had a list of portals that should be open in the firewall and I have open all of them. When I typed in System Files -SFC Command in the run box all that opened was a folder with a bunch of device drivers and application extensions. Nothing ran.. I don't know if this will help you but I forgot to tell you that when I click apply when trying to turn on file sahring and printer sharing I get the user account control box that says windows needs your permission to continue. When I click continue I get the box that says specified service does not exist as an installed service. Thanks again ,Bruce
