wifi issues after new card install

Ok, hoping you guys can get me out of a hole.
The wireless card on my Acer 5920 stopped working to the point it wouldnt let my system boot even to POST. I took the card out and the laptop booted fine.
I installed a new Realtek 8187b card, installed all the drivers and according to windows (vista 32bit) its installed and working fine.
However when I try to scan for wireless networks and finds nothing. Problem solver thing tells me wireless isnt activated. So I press the wireless button on the laptop and it says No device in green letters on the bottom of the screen. Go into mobility centre and it is greyed out on the wireless section.
Anyone had this problem before? Any help is appreciated.

The card was out of my other laptop which i use wired so it wasnt needed. It was working in that one. The driver installed from Windows update (was wired at the time). I download a driver from the realtek site but it doesnt seem to install it.

ok, a bit of an update. I manually installed the drivers from realtek but as a 8187 not an 8187b as the card is. Now windows is registering the card is there and will let me turn wifi on and off in mobility center. Only problem is it in now saying there is no wireless signal.
