Network not showing as connected in system tray

The Network icon in the system tray has a red X on it suggesting the Network is not connected but it is connected. Both my sons are connected to the internet just as I am on my PC and my BluRay player. Usually and for the last 6 years it has a little blue disc showing that both the Internet and the Network is connected. I use it constantly to see if I can connect to the Internet. Now it has a red X against it!
I have tried lots of things over the last 7 hrs to try and fix it but nothing works and on occasion, when in the Network and Sharing Centre, the whole computer is frozen so that the only solution is to switch it off and on and start again!
In the Network and Sharing Centre it shows that it is Unknown that the Network Discovery is Off but when I go to try and change it it will not allow any change. Then it can freeze and nothing can be done at all. I assume that Network Discovery should be On?
In another instance it was saying that another programme was stopping any changes being made.

Can anyone shine any light on this problem please?

Have you tried turning off your modem at the wall and after about a minute restarting it.
Also try right clicking the network icon and go to network and sharing center
Then opposite where it says connection click view status
In the box that opens click diagnose.
Usually this will reset your network adapter

Thanks for your help.
During the last few days the Modem/Router has been switched off and on several times with no change to the Network status.
When the Network and Sharing Centre is opened it just freezes and nothing can be done with it.
However, I cannot see anything remotely like what you describe as "opposite where it says connection click view status".
Remember that under Network and Sharing Centre it says "No such interface supported".
From memory in that space there is usually a simple picture of the computer, the Network and the Globe all connected.
And under that for Sharing and Discovery it says Network discovery is "Off".

So now, in order to get rid of the Network and Sharing Center window I have to switch off the computer. Grrr!
I'll try again when it is back on.

Thanks, but that is the exact part of the problem - what you show is NOT THERE!
It used to be there but not any more!

Here is a link to a very similar problem on another much older forum - networking - Connection Status: unknown access is denied - Super User

I tried using the first solution -

  • Right click Computer and hit Manage
  • Under System Tools, double click Local Users and Groups then click Groups
  • Right click Administrators
  • Click Add to group then click Add then Advance
  • Click Find Now
  • Double click on Local Service then click OK
  • NT Authority\Local Service should show up in the list, click OK then Reboot

  • But under System Tools there is NO Local Users and Groups. Which Vista has this guy got installed! Ha! Now it is just a nightmare!

My Computer

However, under Computer Management (Local) -> System Tools -> Reliability and Performance -> Device Manager -> Network Adapters it showed an exclamation mark inside a yellow triangle against, "isatap {BE7F60F8-0D74-A98A-C17733681D17}" (One of 4 Network Adapters listed)
So I clicked on it and it said, "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" So I tried to update the driver software but it has been searching for about 10 mins and I can't stop it! Ha! Could be all night! I will have to log off to get out of it.
I don't even know if that is the problem but it seems to be pretty close.
I did a search for Network Adapter, isatap BE7F60F8-0D74-A98A-C17733681D17 but found nothing at all.

Under device manager try removing (uninstalling) the network adapter and then reboot. Windows should pick up the adapter after that.

As you suggested I uninstalled the Network adapter that would not start and switched off the computer (logged off completely) and switched it on again but the Network adapter in question is still missing from the list of 4. There are now only 3. Looks like Windows did not 'pick it up'
The red cross remains on the Connection Status icon in the bottom tray.
What do I do now?

There are various ones. You will have to get that from the software I referenced, the device, or the package you bought it in. In fact the package it was bought it in might have a cd with the drivers on it. I can only assume that it was purchased separate from the computer because pcs usually don't come with a network adapter. Is it a usb device? If so you should be able to easily try it in another desktop or laptop. You will need to know the manufacturer and model number to download drivers though.

Well without having your pc in my possession I can't tell you that. I provided you with software that should be able to tell you what it is unless it is dead however if that software doesn't work you'll just have to find out. Note though that you need the adapter's manufacturer and not the pc manufacturer. It should be labeled.

That isn't a real network adapter so you need more than that.

townsbg, I downloaded the BelarcAdvisor and ran the programme and looked at the results and was completely unphased.
Pages of data but unable to deduce a single thing from it.

However, I have noticed one 'benefit' as it were from having the red X against the Internet/network screens - I no longer get numerous home phone false messages showing up on the home phone with the red warning light flashing on and off.
Yes, my home phone is connected to the same line as my computer modem and whenever the computer and modem are on I always get loads of false calls recorded and just have to delete them all.
All this has stopped now that the red X is on the screens in the bottom tray AND I deleted the Microsoft ISATAP Network Adapter as per your instructions.
But that is a beneficial side effect. I really want the little blue circle back to show the internet/Network is connected and to also show this in the Network and sharing Centre.
What can I do now to bring this about please?

My Computer

Again you have to download wireless drivers from the manufacturer and reinstall. I can't help you on which ones to get without knowing the make and model. I suspect that something is wrong with the device which is why I suggested trying it on another computer but again you will need to get the drivers. If you can't figure it out then you can either take your pc to a shop or buy a new adapter but I can't help you determine what it is because I am not there. As for your problem with the phone it sounds like you need a filter such as one here. dsl line filter - Newegg.com I never told you to remove that Microsoft ISATAP adapter just that it wasn't what you where looking for.
