Connectivity Issues

Just built a new machine with Vista Ultimate x64

MSI MoBo P965 Platinum
4GB OCX DDR2 Ram
2ea WD 500GB Sata2 HDD
ATI X1650 Video w/512MB

I cannot connect to my existing small home network unless I plug directly into the cable modem. Three other PC's in the house connect properly via the router/switch (all XP machines) but I cannot. I have disabled firewall, have no AV or other security software installed yet, have checked all settings I can think of - no help. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I have a similar problem. Vista Home Premium with a Fujitsu U810. I can see my D-Link Router, but when i connect, it fails. Windows is unable to identify the problem. The XP machines that I have can connect without any problems.

I have tried with and without security, but the results are the same.

Interestingly, the vista Fujitsu can connect to the network in the Westin Hotel!

Re: Connectivity Issues

Did both of you go to Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager and make sure your network card drivers are installed? Also I heard if you tell Vista your on a "public network" it helps.

Re: Connectivity Issues

Thanks
My drivers are OK. Well the system says so. Where do I set "public network"?

In 'Manage Wireless networkd" it says that the type is "access point" if this is relevant. Not that I can change it.

Cheers

PS Mcintire2, apologies for jumping in on your problem, but it is my wife's PC and we have been trying to fix it for 4 weeks (from new!)

Re: Connectivity Issues

If your trying to connet to your router via Wireless you might want to upgrade the firmware on the router to the latest verison.

Re: Connectivity Issues

Wahay, I fixed mine.
I updated the firmware as suggested by a number of you. I now have v 1.04.
The reason why I did not do this before was that the date on my firmware was leter than that offered by D-Link.
Wrong!
- I have an Australian model
- The user manual, instructions and help web links are American
- The label on the router says 1.03, but if you look on the Australian web page, it says 1.03 fixed the vista problem. So I actually had the US firmware
That aside, I pushed through and it all works.
Note: I ignored the advice to NOT update the firmware by wireless and was lucky. I think I should have done it by the cable.
Anyway thanks guys for the comments
The lessons learned are:
1 - never trust what the label says
2 - stay away from Vista!
3 - thank heavens for the internet community who came up with the answer, especially raj and Coolchris

Re: Connectivity Issues

Sorry all, for taking so long to reply. I lost all my favorites and could not, for the life of me, remember this forums address. I did update the router's firmware and that took care of the issue - only took a few weeks to figure that out. Unfortunately, as an engineer, I always tend to look at the hardest solutions first. It took my son less than a minute to suggest the firmware update.

Thanks again for the help!
