Doesn't support the Microsoft Antivirus API?

I'm getting the message that is described in KB article 927150, in an Excel
2007 workbook that I created, which is:

"Security Alert This file contains encrypted macros that have been disabled
because there is no antivirus software installed that can scan them. To run
these macros, remove the encryption or permission restrictions on this
file."

Apparently OneCare version 2.0 doesn't support the MICROSOFT Antivirus API?

I can reproduce this problem; it appears when you open an Excel workbook
saved in an Excel 2007 xlsm file (a macro-enabled workbook) that has been
encrypted by Excel with a password (which is under the Excel "Prepare"
menu).

The KB article suggests workarounds that might be "useful if your virus-
scanning program does not support the Microsoft Antivirus application
programming interface (API)".

I can't BELIEVE that OneCare antivirus doesn't support this Microsoft API.
Do any other AV programs support this API? Should I upgrade to a "better"
AV program? (I really don't want to change away from OneCare... I was in
the beta test program for 2.0, and I like OneCare.)

Does anyone know if MS plans to update OneCare in the future to support
this API?

David,
I'm pretty certain, though not being a developer I can't be 100% certain, that
OneCare does support the API. I suggest contacting OneCare support - How to

That leads to a page that says "This Forums has already been merged into

Grammatical errors and all.

That site doesn't work. OneCare has a phone number -- I had it written
down at one time and now I can't find it. Maybe I can pry it out of
Microsoft again...

I apologize for posting an old link - that was the old FAQ post.

If it fails to validate your subscription, select the option that you are using
a trial or beta copy and you can proceed to email support without validation
once you've signed in.

I called OneCare Support, and they said sure, OneCare supports the
Microsoft Antivirus API.

However, that's not all that's required in order to use a macro in an
encrypted Office 2007 file. OneCare, unlike Symantec and McAfee's
offerings, doesn't support the method that Office 2007 uses to stream the
content of a macro to the antivirus program to be checked for viruses.

I got this last bit of info after opening a $255 support case with the
Office team, and letting them work with the OneCare programmers.

SO, if you're using OneCare, and you encrypt an Excel file (or a Word
file), and that file has macros, Office 2007 will disable the macros ...
there's no user-interface method to enable the macros. You can, however,
make a registry hack that tells Office to not bother checking macros in
encrypted files.

I'm really surprised that OneCare is a step back from the rest of the
antivirus industry here.

I was a beta tester for OneCare 2.0, and I have now bought the product,
and I generally like it (and I'll probably stay with it).

Interesting.

According to the guy who worked the case for me from the Office 2007
team, besides refunding my money, they will update the existing KB
article that refers to antivirus programs supporting the Microsoft
Antivirus API, and include the fact that there's more to it than that to
get macros in encrypted files usable by Office 2007.

Also, they might create a separate KB article that says that OneCare
can't deal with macros inside encrypted Office 2007 files.

David, I'm glad to read that you got the support call costs refunded. Thanks for
