one care backup can't backup to a second drive?

I just installed a second hard drive internally- and for the first time
tried to run one care backup- it can only see my DVD burner and not the new
hard drive. What gives with that? My Vista backup program has no trouble
seeing the second drive.

I just tried going to MS's one care online help page and it just locked up
the browser.

Windows Live OneCare cannot backup directly to an internal drive.

However, you can use a workaround. Select the option to make the computer a
"hub" in v2.0.
Then create a Share on the second drive. Create a name a folder whatever you
wish and share it with "Everyone" granting full rights.
Open OneCare, click on Change Settings and create a backup plan for all
computers in the Circle (even if you only have a single PC). Point the backup to
the network Share that you just created.
Save.

Re: one care backup can't backup to a second drive?

How about if it doesn't recognize my external HD (a Mactor), which Retrospect
can find and back up to?? Any special settings or formatting, or something
in Disk Management, or Norton Disk Partition??

Re: one care backup can't backup to a second drive?

Is the Retrospect software installed on your PC? If the drive is connected via
USB and formatted, OneCare backup should see it. If something else is
conflicting, OneCare can't use the drive.

Re: one care backup can't backup to a second drive?

It would be nice if future versions of OneCare directly back up to another
internal drive without going through those hoops. Please pass that
suggestion on if you have contact with the developers. Meanwhile, I plan on
purchasing True Image.

Re: one care backup can't backup to a second drive?

So, it'll back up to just about anything but an internal drive, probably
just MS trying to over protect us? Perhaps the logic is that if someone
steals the computer or the office burns down, the internal backup drive will
be lost- therefore, MS insists that it must backup to an external entity
including a network- since networks are often somewhere else.

Or, might there be another reason? Since I'll be purchasing True Image, it's
not important to me- but if it did backup internally, I'd probably save the
cost of True Image.

You've nailed the reasons for the most part, I suspect.

Re: one care backup can't backup to a second drive?

Well, it's nice that Mother Microsoft wants to protect us- but The Great
Mother needs to understand that some of us are grown ups. Then again, it
seems that most AV programs do the same. McAfee used to drive me nuts with
alerts and warnings, etc. It would even send me advertisements that would
pop up in the tray.

BTW, I notice that in the magazine reviews of AV programs (and suites)-
OneCare either rates very low or isn't even mentioned. Somehow I think it
just can't be that bad. With all the resources that MS has, it can, if it
wishes, have the best AV program.

Regarding V2 and the installation problems- most AV programs have those too.
My "Vista box" came with a trial version of McAfee- but when I tried to
download the commercial program, it just wouldn't install- not at all.

Steve, I notice you are very active in the official OneCare forums too with
thousands of postings- do you get paid to do this or you are just enjoying
yourself so much? <G>

Re: one care backup can't backup to a second drive?

I think you have to consider who OneCare is designed for. It is designed for the
average user who doesn't want to think about options more than they have to.
They want to have the program secure them and do tune-ups and backups. It needs
to "just do it" for them. For someone wanting granular control, evaluation of
risk factors, etc, OneCare probably isn't the right product.

When OneCare 1.0 was in private beta, an invitation for moderators was extended
to the small group of private testers in advance of OneCare going public. I and
several others volunteered. Sometimes I think I'm crazy for the time I spend
supporting people for free, but most of the time it brings me satisfaction to
help people with a product I believe in. I also communicate directly with
members of the program team at Microsoft, so I feel that I am able to funnel
feedback to the developers from my fellow customers. No, I am not paid for this.
It is strictly volunteer, though my MVP Award is largely based on my activities
supporting OneCare customers. I get some perks for that award, but it could not
be considered pay for spending a few hours every day answering posts. :-)
