can't turn on remote firewall from hub

With Onecare set up as a circle, one computer being set up as hub, the
hub gets a notice if another's AV or firewall is off. I was recently
reinstalling some software on a non-hub client and turned it off, so
got the warning.

I turned AV on remotely with a click of a button. I clicked the button
for firewall and it turned on for the remote computer, but the hub
still shows it 'in progress'. It never changes to green. Does anyone
have a clue why that's happening? I have NetNanny installed on the
non-hub computers but get the same result with it turned off.

Where does the hub get the status of other computers in the circle?
From a Live server? Or from the other PCs directly? I can't see how
the latter scenario would work if remote computers are mobile. It's
more realistic for the clients to each report to a server, and for the
hub to report the status gotten from it.

Thanks in advance.

The status is typically reported both to the server and directly to the PC on
the local LAN. However, as you've noticed, there are times when the status does
not get updated locally and it relies on that round trip to the server, which
can take an hour or more - assuming both PCs are communicating with the server
regularly.

Is there some way to optimize the direct communications between PCs?

I'm not aware of any way to optimize it. As I said, it should update almost
immediately on the same LAN, so if you aren't seeing that, there may be a
service that your system is not running.

Sounds like I need to call tech support, but previous experience with
them left me unimpressed.

You may get lucky. This is an area that I've got much to learn about yet and I'm
sure that the same holds true for many of the support techs, too.

Ideally they would know more than me or you. I'm not holding my
breath.
